Job Title: School Maintenance Officer

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: School Administrator / Operations Manager (through Internal Auditor)

Job Summary

  • The Maintenance Officer is responsible for the effective upkeep, repair, and preventive maintenance of all school buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • The role ensures that the learning environment remains safe, functional, and conducive for students and staff.
  • The Maintenance Officer works proactively to prevent breakdowns and responds promptly to maintenance emergencies, coordinating both in-house tasks and external contractors when required.

Key Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance & Repairs:

  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, classrooms, offices, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance needs.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor construction work.
  • Ensure timely repair of fixtures, fittings, and structural issues to minimise disruption to school activities.
  • Maintain proper registration, servicing, and repair schedules for all machinery, including generators and motorized equipment.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Conduct routine checks on fire safety systems such as fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and exits.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate scheduled compliance works (e.g., testing equipment, emergency lighting checks, safety certifications).
  • Immediate response to all maintenance requests including power outages, leaks, or hazards.

Vendor & Contractor Coordination:

  • Liaise with external contractors and vendors for specialised repair work.
  • Schedule and supervise contracted maintenance tasks to ensure quality and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of all outsourced maintenance activities.

Inventory & Resource Management:

  • Maintain an updated inventory of tools, materials, and supplies required for maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure effective budget utilisation and track expenditures for maintenance activities.
  • Recommend procurement of materials and equipment when necessary.

Team Supervision & Collaboration:

  • Supervise cleaners, ensuring the school environment is consistently clean and well-maintained.
  • Supervise gardeners to ensure lawns, fields, and flowerbeds are neat, trimmed, and aesthetically maintained.
  • Collaborate with school staff to schedule maintenance tasks with minimal disruption to teaching and learning.
  • Assist in organising and setting up equipment for school events, programmes, and activities.

Project & Operational Support:

  • Perform small construction and improvement projects such as basic carpentry, concrete work, and pathway adjustments.
  • Assist in both reactive and preventive maintenance across all facilities.
  • Implement routines to ensure ongoing campus upkeep and facility improvements.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Preventive Maintenance: Completion rate of scheduled preventive tasks.
  • Response Time: Speed and efficiency in addressing maintenance requests.
  • Budget Management: Efficient utilisation of maintenance budget and resources.
  • Safety Compliance: Consistent adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
  • Cost & Energy Efficiency: Reduction in utility waste and effective facility operation.
  • Work Order Completion: Quality and timeliness of completed tasks.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Positive feedback from staff, students, and administration.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree/HND in Engineering, Technical Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar maintenance role (preferably in a school or institutional environment).
  • Proven ability to work independently, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • High integrity, confidentiality, and reliability.
  • Skilled in safe use of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Proactive attitude with strong problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of maintaining generators and motorized equipment.
  • Excellent leadership and team supervision skills.
  • Strong organisational and communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to supervise support staff effectively.

Salary
N120,000 monthly.
