The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Summary

  • The Head of Biomedical Engineering plays a critical role in the design, development, and maintenance of advanced medical technologies that support patient care across the hospital.
  • This position involves applying engineering principles to solve complex medical challenges, ensuring that biomedical equipment, devices, and systems operate efficiently, safely, and effectively.
  • The Head Biomedical Engineering is responsible for leading the evaluation, selection, and integration of new medical technologies, collaborating with clinicians to tailor these innovations to meet specific clinical needs.
  • This role includes overseeing the installation, calibration, and maintenance of a wide range of medical devices, from diagnostic imaging systems to life-support machines, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards and safety protocols.
  • In addition to hands-on technical work, the Biomedical Engineering is involved in the strategic planning and development of the hospital's biomedical infrastructure, advising on the acquisition of new technologies and managing large-scale projects aimed at upgrading or expanding the hospital’s technical capabilities.
  • The Head of Biomedical Engineering also plays a vital role in training and educating clinical staff on the proper use and maintenance of medical devices, enhancing their ability to deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Engaging in research and development activities, the Biomedical Engineer works to innovate and refine biomedical technologies, contributing to the advancement of healthcare engineering.
  • This position requires close collaboration with healthcare providers, IT specialists, and regulatory bodies to ensure that all biomedical systems are aligned with the hospital’s clinical objectives and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership:

  • Lead the biomedical engineering team in the evaluation, installation, and maintenance of medical devices and systems.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to clinicians and other healthcare professionals on the use and optimization of biomedical equipment.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation care.

Strategic Development:

  • Collaborate with hospital leadership to develop and implement strategies for upgrading and expanding the hospital’s biomedical infrastructure.
  • Identify and recommend new technologies that enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Lead projects focused on the integration of advanced medical technologies into clinical practice.

Governance:

  • Ensure that all biomedical equipment and systems comply with national and international safety standards and regulations.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of maintenance schedules, ensuring equipment reliability and patient safety.
  • Participate in audits and quality assurance initiatives to continuously improve biomedical engineering practices.
  • Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate.

Line Management:

  • Supervise and manage the performance of the biomedical engineering team, including engineers and technicians.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide opportunities for professional development and training.
  • Manage resource allocation and scheduling to ensure timely completion of projects and maintenance tasks.
  • Manage staffing levels and scheduling to meet the needs of the department and the hospital.
  • Provide strong leadership to develop, coach and ensure a high performing team.
  • Establish the department goals, objectives and operating procedures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a First Degree in Clinical / Biomedical Engineering or equivalent in relevant experience
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience of operations and maintenance in Clinical/Biomedical Engineering at hospitals with at least 5 years’ experience in a managerial role
  • Proven experience working in a complex project
  • Successful large scale Estates and Facility project experience within the healthcare field
  • Experience managing issues and identifying any potential risk to strategy
  • Evidence of successfully implementing Estates and Facilities strategy with allocated budget/resources
  • Proven experience of managing an Estates and Facilities department.
