Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. It is run by the Society of Jesus, in collaboration with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, and welcomes both Christian and non-Christian students.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Geography Teacher

Location: Ihiala / Okija - Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Description

  • The Geography Teacher will be responsible for building a deep understanding of physical, human, and regional geography.
  • The ideal candidate will bridge classroom theory with spatial analysis, map-reading skills, and environmental awareness, preparing students thoroughly for internal assessments and external examinations (such as WAEC, NECO, or Cambridge IGCSE).

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver structured lessons covering map reading and interpretation, physical geography (landforms, climate, vegetation), human geography (population, settlement, industry), and regional studies.
  • Practical Skills Development: Train students in practical geography skills, including surveying, meteorological data collection, statistical data interpretation, and advanced map-reading techniques.
  • Fieldwork Coordination: Organize and lead geographic field trips, excursions, and local environmental observations to connect classroom learning with real-world geographical phenomena.
  • Exam Preparation: Guide senior students intensively through past questions, marking schemes, and practical map-work requirements for terminal regional or international examinations.
  • Assessment & Evaluation: Set valid test questions, grade assignments and projects promptly, and provide constructive feedback to help students improve.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and lesson plans, and participate actively in science/social science departmental and general staff meetings.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.) in Geography, or a Bachelor of Science/Arts (B.Sc./B.A.) in Geography, Environmental Management, or a related discipline plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
  • Professional Certification: Registration with a relevant national teaching council or regulatory body (such as TRCN) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 2–3 years of classroom teaching experience at the secondary school level, with a documented history of strong student performance in external exams.

Key Skills:

  • Subject Expertise: Deep knowledge of geographic principles, cartography, meteorological instruments, and spatial analysis.
  • Analytical & Spatial Thinking: High proficiency in map reading, interpreting topographical maps, and calculating gradients, scales, and coordinates.
  • Instructional Clarity: Ability to simplify complex natural phenomena (like tectonic movements, planetary winds, or rock formations) using visual aids, diagrams, and models.
  • Field Management: Strong organizational skills to manage student logistics and safety during outdoor fieldwork and excursions.
  • Environmental & Resource Awareness: Passion for teaching sustainability, climate change, and resource management.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong digital literacy, including experience with interactive boards, digital maps (like Google Earth), and basic school management portals. Knowledge of introductory Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools is a plus.
  • High level of professional ethics, integrity, and absolute dedication to student development.
  • Willingness to collaborate with department heads, parents, and school administration.
