Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. It is run by the Society of Jesus, in collaboration with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, and welcomes both Christian and non-Christian students.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: French Language Teacher

Location: Ihiala / Okija - Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Description

  • The French Language Teacher will be responsible for building students' fluency, comprehension, and literacy in the French language, while fostering an appreciation for Francophone cultures.
  • The ideal candidate will create an immersive, communicative classroom environment that develops students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, preparing them thoroughly for both internal assessments and external examinations (such as WAEC, NECO, or DELF/DALF certifications).

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, interactive lessons focused on French grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, phonetics, and conversational skills.
  • Immersive Instruction: Conduct lessons predominantly in French to build students' listening comprehension and speaking confidence through role-plays, dialogues, and audio-visual aids.
  • Exam Preparation: Prepare students intensively for the oral, listening, and written components of terminal regional and international examinations.
  • Cultural Engagement: Introduce students to Francophone literature, music, and traditions, and coordinate activities such as a French Club, language days, or excursions to enhance learning.
  • Assessment & Evaluation: Design, administer, and grade oral and written tests promptly, providing detailed, constructive feedback to support language acquisition.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and lesson plans, and participate actively in departmental and staff meetings.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.) in French, or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in French plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
  • Additional Certifications: Possession of an international French language diploma, such as DELF (B2 level minimum) or DALF, is highly advantageous.
  • Professional Certification: Registration with a relevant national teaching council or regulatory body (such as TRCN) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 2–3 years of French teaching experience at the secondary school level, with a proven track record of preparing students successfully for external examinations.

Key Skills:

  • Language Proficiency: Near-native or high fluency (both spoken and written) in French, with excellent pronunciation and a deep understanding of French grammar and syntax.
  • Communicative Methodology: Skill in using modern, interactive language teaching methods (e.g., total physical response, communicative approach) over rigid rote memorization.
  • Patience & Encouragement: Ability to create a safe, low-anxiety environment that encourages students to speak and make mistakes as part of the learning process.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills in both French and English to effectively engage with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Organization: Strong classroom management and lesson-planning skills to balance oral practice and written coursework within class periods.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong digital literacy, including proficiency with language-learning software, multimedia tools, and school management portals.
  • High level of professional ethics, integrity, and passion for multicultural education.
  • Willingness to collaborate with department heads, language laboratories, parents, and school administration.
