Home Tutor - Secondary Level at Sheltered Hope Initiative (SHI)

Sheltered Hope Initiative (SHI) is an NGO with the mission of eradicating homelessness in Nigeria, 1,000 persons at a time, 1 city at a time, through our communal shelter program that will help homeless Nigerian residents transition into a state of self-sufficiency by which they become valuable and contributing members of the society.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Home Tutor - Secondary Level

Location: Lagos

Role Description

• This is a full-time, on-site role for a Home Tutor based in Lagos, Nigeria.
• The tutor will provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in specific subject areas, assist with daily assignments, projects, and research tasks. 
• Develop customized lesson plans and learning activities tailored to the curriculum and each student’s unique pace and needs. 
• Conduct quizzes and practice tests to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.
• Adjust teaching strategies accordingly. Teach effective study strategies, note-taking, organization, and critical thinking skills. 
• Update parents, guardians, and classroom teachers on student progress and behavioral shifts. Foster a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment that supports the emotional and social development of students.

Qualifications

• Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject area or a valid teaching certification/license.
• Experience: Previous tutoring or teaching experience is highly advantageous.
• Subject Matter Expertise: Strong knowledge of the required subjects (e.g., Math, Sciences, English, Further Math).
• Soft Skills: High levels of patience, excellent communication, and the ability to build trusting relationships with adolescents

• Adaptability: Ability to pivot teaching approaches on the fly to match different learning styles and speed.
• Patience & Empathy: Understanding and encouraging when students face academic challenges or lack confidence.
• Organization: Strong time-management skills to balance multiple students, schedules, and lesson prep.
