Alaro City Development FZC is an integrated, mixed-use city planned for over 2,000 hectares in the North West Quadrant of the Lekki Free Zone. Alaro City’s vision goes beyond alleviating what is a self-evident problem - that of stifling urban congestion and a dearth of quality housing and commercial property in Lagos and Africa as a whole.

Rather, we aim to help create the infrastructure - the living and working spaces, communities, schools, and hospitals - that will help sustain and accelerate Nigeria’s economic growth, meet the aspirations of Africa’s burgeoning middle classes, and serve as a catalyst for further urban development. The people in our team are multi-skilled and experts in their respective fields. They possess a unique drive, underpinned by the desire to help improve Africa’s urban development.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Hydraulic Engineer (Civil / Water Resources)

Location: Lagos
Job type: Full-time

Role Summary

  • The Hydraulic Engineer will be a hands-on design professional responsible for the full design lifecycle of hydraulic, drainage and water infrastructure; from catchment analysis and hydraulic sizing through to detailed design, drafting, and the production of construction-ready drawings, calculations, specifications, and Bills of Quantities.
  • This is fundamentally a design role. The successful candidate will personally size drains, channels and culverts, model drainage and flood networks, design and detail hydraulic structures, carry out flood risk assessments, build and develop Civil 3D and Revit models, and prepare technical documentation.
  • The role also includes design coordination with the planning, roads, structural and MEP teams, design review against codes and standards, and periodic site visits to verify that installations match the issued design intent.

Key Responsibility
Stormwater & Urban Drainage Design:

  • Carry out hydrological analysis including rainfall-runoff estimation, IDF/design-storm derivation, time of concentration, and runoff computation using the Rational Method and SCS/SUDS approaches.
  • Size road and site drainage networks: gullies and inlets, pipe and channel networks, culverts, swales and open drains, using Manning and Colebrook-White methods.
  • Design Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) including permeable paving, bioretention, filter strips, swales, and detention/retention/attenuation ponds in line with the CIRIA SuDS Manual (C753).
  • Design outfalls, flow-control and attenuation structures (orifices, weirs, vortex flow controls), and stormwater quality treatment provisions.

Flood Risk Assessment & Hydraulic Modelling:

  • Delineate catchments and build hydrological models (e.g. HEC-HMS) to derive design flows and hydrographs.
  • Develop 1D and 1D/2D hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, EPA SWMM, InfoWorks ICM) for river reaches, drainage networks and overland flow.
  • Prepare Flood Risk Assessments and floodplain/flood-hazard mapping, apply climate-change allowances, and develop and evaluate flood mitigation and drainage strategies.

Hydraulic Structures Design & Detailing:

  • Design and detail hydraulic structures including culverts, headwalls and wingwalls, lined and unlined channels, weirs, spillways, drop structures, stilling basins and energy dissipators, gabions and erosion/scour protection.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations for open-channel flow, backwater/afflux, energy dissipation and scour, and coordinate structural and reinforcement detailing of concrete hydraulic structures.
  • Produce construction-ready structural and hydraulic details, sections, and schedules to the project documentation standard.

Water Supply & Sewerage Networks:

  • Design potable water reticulation including demand analysis, storage sizing, and booster/pump station sizing; carry out network hydraulic analysis (EPANET, WaterGEMS).
  • Design gravity and rising sewers and wastewater conveyance, including pump stations and rising-main hydraulics (SewerGEMS).
  • Design connections to Alaro City’s central utility infrastructure, including potable water, irrigation, stormwater, sewage and reclaimed-water networks.

Drafting & Production of Drawings:

  • Personally draft and produce all hydraulic and drainage drawings; catchment plans, network layouts, longitudinal sections, grading plans, structural details, schedules, and legends; to construction-ready standard.
  • Build, develop and maintain Civil 3D models (grading, corridors, pipe/pressure networks) and Revit models at the appropriate LOD for each design stage.
  • Set up sheet sets, title blocks, view templates, annotation standards and drawing numbering aligned with the project’s documentation standards.
  • Issue drawings at each design stage (concept, preliminary, detailed, IFC) with full revision control, transmittals and drawing registers, and produce AutoCAD deliverables where required.

Design Review & Technical Documentation:

  • Review and check own design output and that of junior staff or sub-consultants for technical accuracy, code compliance and constructability.
  • Prepare design basis reports, drainage and flood risk strategy reports, design narratives and calculation packages for each project.
  • Develop and review Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and take-offs from the hydraulic design, ensuring quantities reconcile with the issued drawings, and maintain a structured document-control system.

Preconstruction Planning:

  • Provide hydraulic and drainage design input to project programming, packaging strategies and procurement planning during preconstruction.
  • Prepare tender documentation including drawings, specifications, BOQs and technical scopes of work, and evaluate contractor technical submissions and method statements from a design perspective.

Construction Support & Periodic Site Visits:

  • Conduct periodic site visits to verify that installations match the issued design intent and to resolve design-related queries arising during construction.
  • Review contractor shop drawings, builder’s work and combined services drawings, and material submittals against the issued design and specifications.
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), issue design clarifications and site instructions, and witness key testing and commissioning activities (CCTV survey, pressure and infiltration testing) from a design-conformance perspective.

Codes, Standards & Compliance:

  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable standards including BS EN 752 and BS EN 12056 (drainage), the CIRIA SuDS Manual C753, Sewers for Adoption / Design and Construction Guidance, the DMRB drainage standards (CD 526, CG 501), BS EN 1997 (geotechnical design of structures), HR Wallingford hydraulic design tables, and the Nigerian Building Code and relevant local authority requirements.
  • Stay current with code revisions, climate-change resilience and sustainability frameworks (e.g. EDGE, LEED, BREEAM) as they apply to water and drainage infrastructure.

Requirements
