Job Title: Guidance Counselor

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Description

  • The Guidance Counselor provides academic, social-emotional, and career counseling services to students.
  • The role supports students in understanding themselves, resolving personal and academic challenges, planning their educational pathways, and preparing for post-secondary opportunities.
  • The counselor collaborates with parents, teachers, and administrators to create an environment that supports student well-being and success.

 Responsibilities
Program Development & Delivery:

  • Develop, implement, teach, and revise curriculum related to the competencies of the guidance and counseling program.
  • Conduct ongoing research to update curriculum and guidance interventions.
  • Plan and facilitate parent seminars related to guidance, mental health, behaviour, and student development.
  • Assist in developing annual and long-term goals for the guidance department.
  • Assist in preparing the annual guidance department budget.

 Student Support & Counseling:

  • Provide individual and group counseling to support academic, emotional, behavioural, and social needs.
  • Assist students in planning for post-secondary school pathways including college preparation and career planning.
  • Support students with career days, shadowing opportunities, industry mentorships, and related activities.
  • Identify student needs through assessments, observations, and referrals and link them to appropriate interventions.
  • Provide crisis intervention and develop safety plans for at-risk students.
  • Recognize signs of substance abuse, bullying, trauma, or mental health concerns and implement appropriate measures.

 School Collaboration & Advocacy:

  • Assist teachers in implementing special services and mainstreaming students with special needs.
  • Consult with teachers and administrators regarding student behaviour, academic challenges, and well-being.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with parents, guiding them through concerns and supporting student success.
  • Advocate for students while ensuring confidentiality and ethical practice.

 Records, Reporting & Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student guidance records.
  • Interpret and share relevant information ethically with authorized staff.
  • Generate reports on student development trends, interventions, and outcomes.

Professional Development:

  • Attend professional seminars, workshops, and conferences to stay current in school counseling practices.
  • Master relevant computer technology including student information systems, data analysis tools, and office software.

Requirements / Skills

  • Preferably female

  • Teaching, coaching, and facilitation skills.
  • Strong communication (verbal & written).
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Data analysis and reporting skills.
  • Ability to use counseling management systems and databases.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

  • Crisis management and intervention abilities.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards and confidentiality.
  • Build supportive and constructive partnerships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Plan and administer guidance and counseling programs effectively.
  • Integrate counseling programs into the school curriculum.
  • Identify student needs and intervene appropriately.
  • Recognize signs of abuse, trauma, and distress.
  • Implement crisis prevention and intervention strategies.
  • Advocate for student well-being and safety.

Salary 
N200,000 per month.
