Job Title: Chinese Translator
Location: Ikeja, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time
Job Summary
- The Chinese Translator will facilitate effective communication between Chinese-speaking and English-speaking stakeholders by providing accurate oral interpretation and written translation services.
- The role requires fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English, a deep understanding of cultural nuances, and the ability to work in fast-paced business or technical environments such as trade, construction, oil and gas, or diplomatic settings.
Key Responsibilities
Translation & Interpretation:
- Translate documents, manuals, contracts, correspondences, reports, and technical materials from Chinese to English and vice versa.
- Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during meetings, conferences, training sessions, and official visits.
- Interpret verbal communication during negotiations, site visits, and official functions.
Administrative & Liaison Support:
- Serve as a liaison between Chinese and Nigerian teams or clients, ensuring mutual understanding.
- Support expatriate staff in understanding Nigerian local laws, business customs, and work culture.
- Assist local staff in understanding Chinese business etiquette and communication expectations.
Documentation & Communication:
- Review and edit translated materials to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness.
- Maintain confidentiality and data protection when handling sensitive documents.
- Compile and maintain an organized glossary of terms relevant to the industry (e.g., legal, technical, engineering, medical).
Project & Team Support:
- Support HR and Operations teams in onboarding and training Chinese or Nigerian staff.
- Help draft bilingual reports or minutes for project meetings.
- Provide translation support during audits, inspections, or regulatory engagements.
Other Duties:
- Travel as required for fieldwork, site visits, or diplomatic assignments.
- Attend Chinese cultural events or community outreach programs and provide translation support.
- Assist with translation during emergencies, such as health, legal, or security issues involving Chinese expatriates or Nigerian partners.
Requirements
Experience:
- 2–5 years of proven experience as a translator or interpreter, preferably in a corporate, diplomatic, or technical environment.
- Experience working in sectors like manufacturing, oil & gas, construction, or import/export is an added advantage.
Skills and Competencies:
- Proficient in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese and English.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian socio-cultural and business context.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Attention to detail, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Ability to multitask, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and translation software
Desirable Attributes:
- Familiarity with Chinese and Nigerian legal, commercial, or immigration terminologies.
- Cross-cultural sensitivity and diplomacy.
- Adaptability in diverse workplace settings.
- Willingness to travel if need be.
