Job Title: Agronomist

Job Description

  • A reputable agricultural organization requires the services of an experienced Agronomist to support and lead crop production, plantation development, agroforestry systems, orchard management, nursery operations, field crop production, horticultural activities, yearly crop calendars, and cropping projects.
  • The successful candidate must have practical experience in agronomy, tree crops, fruit orchards, field crops, nursery management, grafting, soil fertility, pest and disease management, crop planning, farm supervision, crop calendar development, and cropping project planning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead agronomic planning and field crop production activities.
  • Develop yearly crop calendars, seasonal crop plans, crop rotation schedules, and cropping project plans.
  • Supervise land preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvesting operations.
  • Support establishment and management of tree crops, orchards, plantations, and agroforestry systems.
  • Work with crops such as oil palm, coconut, cocoa, citrus, cashew, mango, plantain/banana, rice, maize, groundnut, soybean, cassava, yam, cowpea, vegetables, and related crops.
  • Oversee nursery operations, seedling production, transplanting, grafting, budding, layering, and fruit tree propagation.
  • Monitor crop growth, pest pressure, disease incidence, soil condition, water stress, and field performance.
  • Recommend fertilizer, manure, irrigation, pruning, pest control, and crop management practices.
  • Train and supervise farm workers on good agronomic practices.
  • Prepare crop calendars, input schedules, field work plans, cropping project plans, and production reports.
  • Support yield improvement, crop quality, cost control, and farm productivity.
  • Maintain accurate field, nursery, orchard, plantation, and crop performance records.
  • Advise management on crop selection, plantation planning, farm expansion, crop diversification, and production strategy.

Requirements

  • HND, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent qualification in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Agroforestry, Soil Science, Plant Science, Crop Protection, Agricultural Extension, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8–10+ years’ practical field experience in crop production, plantation management, orchard development, agroforestry, field crops, horticulture, nursery operations, or farm management.
  • Practical knowledge of tree crops, orchards, field crops, cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nursery systems, and crop protection.
  • Experience with oil palm, coconut, cocoa, citrus, cashew, mango, plantain/banana, rice, maize, groundnut, soybean, cassava, and vegetables will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of grafting, budding, layering, nursery establishment, seedling management, and fruit tree propagation is important.
  • Must be able to develop yearly crop calendars, cropping project plans, crop rotation schedules, input schedules, and field reports.
  • Must be able to supervise farm workers, identify field problems, recommend corrective action, and produce clear reports.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors, travel to farm sites, and operate in rural/farm environments.
  • Must be honest, disciplined, practical, observant, proactive, and able to work with minimal supervision.
