Job Title: Kitchen Assistant

Job Summary
- The kitchen assistant supports the Food & Nutrition Services Department by assisting in the preparation and distribution of meals while maintaining the highest standards of food hygiene, sanitation, and safety.
- The role ensures that patients receive nutritious meals on time and that the kitchen remains clean, organized, and compliant with hospital and public health regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Food Preparation:
- Assist cooks with washing, peeling, chopping, slicing, and preparing food ingredients.
- Prepare simple meals and beverages as directed by the Head Cook.
- Assist in assembling patient meal trays accurately.
Meal Service:
- Serve meals to patients, staff, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ensure meals are delivered promptly and at the appropriate temperature.
- Collect used meal trays and utensils after meal service.
- Report any patient concerns regarding meals to the supervisor.
Cleaning and Sanitation:
- Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment.
- Clean and sanitize workstations, kitchen equipment, refrigerators, storage areas,.
- Sweep, mop, and disinfect kitchen floors regularly.
- Dispose of waste according to hospital infection prevention and waste management procedures.
Food Storage and Inventory:
- Receive and properly store food supplies and kitchen consumables.
- Label and store food according to food safety standards.
- Rotate stock using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) principle.
- Report damaged, expired, or low-stock items to the kitchen supervisor.
Health, Safety and Compliance:
- Follow hospital food safety, infection prevention, and occupational health policies.
- Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintain excellent personal hygiene.
- Handle food safely to prevent contamination.
- Report accidents, hazards, equipment faults, or safety concerns immediately.
Team Support:
- Assist the Head Cook and other kitchen staff during busy periods.
- Participate in kitchen meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Carry out other duties assigned by the kitchen supervisor.
Qualifications
Education:
- Minimum of primary school leaving certificate and senior secondary school certificate (SSCE) or equivalent.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a commercial kitchen, hospital, hotel, restaurant, or catering environment.
