Job Title: Group Head, Treasury

Location: Lagos

Job Purpose / Objectives

  • The Group Head - Treasury is a strategically critical leadership role responsible for safeguarding the Group's financial assets, optimising liquidity across operations, and managing the full spectrum of financial risk, including foreign exchange, interest rate, counterparty, and sovereign risk.
  • Operating in a complex, multi-currency environment spanning both hard-currency and restricted- currency markets, the Group Head - Treasury ensures the organisation maintains financial resilience, funds its growth ambitions, and complies with diverse central bank regulations across the continent.
  • This role is central to enabling the Group's expansion strategy by securing competitive funding, managing banking relationships at a regional level, and deploying best-in-class treasury technology across the Group.

Key Responsibilties
Liquidity & Cash Management:

  • Design and execute the Group's liquidity management framework across all entities, ensuring optimal cash positioning in both local and hard currencies.
  • Develop and maintain rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts and 12-month liquidity projections with variance analysis by business unit.
  • Oversee the bank reconciliation process with integration of banks to ERP system to drive efficient bank recons.
  • Own and maintain the Group's bank reconciliation policy and controls framework, ensuring consistent application across all entities.
  • Optimise working capital funding through structured trade finance solutions.
  • Manage trapped cash strategies across restricted-currency markets (e.g., Ethiopia, Angola), including back-to-back arrangements and auctioned FX windows.

Financial Risk Management:

  • Develop and implement the Group's Financial Risk Management Policy, encompassing foreign exchange risk, interest rate risk, counterparty credit risk, and sovereign/political risk.
  • Execute hedging strategies using forwards and natural hedging techniques, where applicable.
  • Monitor and report on Value-at-Risk (VaR), Cash-Flow-at-Risk (CFaR), and stress-testing scenarios to the Group CFO.
  • Manage counterparty exposure across banking relationships, maintaining a diversified panel of Tier 1 international and leading pan-African banks.
  • Implement insurance and credit risk mitigation programmes.

Debt Management & Capital Structure

  • Support in-country efforts on debt origination and refinancing, including syndicated loans, bilateral facilities, and development finance institution (DFI) funding.
  • Maintain and optimise the Group's capital structure, targeting an appropriate leverage ratio aligned with the Board-approved financial policy and credit rating objectives.
  • Negotiate and manage banking facilities, covenants, and security packages across entities, ensuring compliance with facility agreements.
  • Prepare and present treasury updates to the CFO.

Banking Relationships & Stakeholder Management:

  • Own and manage the Group's banking relationship framework, conducting annual bank reviews, RFPs for transactional banking, and wallet-share optimisation.
  • Build and maintain relationships with development finance institutions (e.g. IFC and AfDB) to access concessional and blended finance.

Treasury Technology & Operations:

  • Lead the implementation and optimisation of the Treasury Management System (TMS) integrated with Business Central, ensuring straight-through processing and real-time visibility.
  • Drive automation of bank reconciliations across all Operating Companies, payment processing (SWIFT/local RTGS), and cash positioning through API connectivity and AI-enabled process automation.
  • Establish and enforce treasury controls, segregation of duties, and internal governance in line with SOX-equivalent frameworks.
  • Produce monthly treasury management reports, including FX exposure reports, debt maturity profiles, counterparty limits utilisation, and hedge effectiveness assessments.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline; a Master's degree or MBA is advantageous.
  • Recognised professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) or Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) or CFA charter.
  • 10 - 15 years' progressive experience in corporate treasury or finance, including at least 3 years in a senior or group treasury leadership role.
  • Demonstrable experience managing treasury operations across multiple currencies and jurisdictions, ideally within African or other emerging markets.
  • Hands-on experience operating in restricted-currency environments, including trapped-cash management and central bank/exchange control engagement.
  • Proven track record in debt origination and syndication, spanning bank, bilateral, and development finance institution (DFI/IFC) funding.
  • Experience leading the selection and implementation of a Treasury Management System (TMS) and treasury process automation.
