Job Description
- The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other specimen samples from patients in a safe, accurate, and professional manner while ensuring patient comfort and adherence to infection prevention and quality standards.
- The role also involves proper specimen labeling, documentation, transportation, and maintaining high standards of patient care and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples through venipuncture and capillary puncture following established procedures.
- Verify patient identity and confirm test requests before specimen collection.
- Explain collection procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation.
- Label specimens accurately and complete all required documentation.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to the laboratory.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the phlebotomy area and equipment.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection and provide appropriate assistance when necessary.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of phlebotomy supplies and report shortages.
- Ensure proper disposal of sharps and biohazard waste according to safety regulations.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection policies.
- Collaborate effectively with laboratory personnel, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in quality assurance, continuous improvement, and accreditation activities.
- Attend mandatory training and comply with the diagnostic centre's policies and procedures.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Candidates should possess an HND, OND, BSc in Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related healthcare discipline.
- Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (where applicable).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is an added advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital, diagnostic centre, or medical laboratory.
- Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an added advantage.
