Team Lead at Malaria Consortium

Established in 2003, Malaria Consortium is one of the world’s leading non-profit organisations specializing in the comprehensive prevention, control and treatment of malaria and other communicable diseases among vulnerable and underprivileged populations. We increasingly find our work on malaria can be effectively integrated with other similar public health interventions for greater impact and therefore expanded our remit to include child health and neglected tropical disease interventions.

Malaria Consortium in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) distributed insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Ondo state in 2025. Malaria Consortium is also conducting monitoring and evaluation (M&E) research related to the campaign. Both the campaign and the M&E research are funded by Open Philanthropy based on GiveWell’s recommendation. The project will gather comprehensive data to assess the outcomes of the campaign in terms of ITN coverage, use rates and net physical durability.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Team Lead

Location: Ondo

Purpose of the assignment

• The purpose of these terms of reference (TOR) is to engage research personnel who will carry out a household survey in Ondo State.

Scope

• The survey will be used to gather data on ITN ownership and use rates and associated factors, the physical condition of the ITNs, malaria prevention in pregnancy, treatment-seeking behaviour, and other relevant variables through household visits.

Methods

• During the survey, a sample of 832 households will be selected in 52 wards across the state. The 52 wards will be selected using population-proportional-to-size (PPS) sampling. Each team will cover a ward per day.
• The survey includes household enumeration to sample households in each ward (cluster) randomly and administering interviews involving household heads and also women 15–49 years old, using mobile devices with the SurveyCTO software.

Specific Tasks
Team Leader:

• Will be responsible for a team of four data collectors (or interviewers).
• Will be required to attend training prior to survey.
• Leads the team to enumerate all households in a selected settlement in each of the sampled wards assigned to the team.
• Submit the list to the coordinator for sampling of 16 households.
• Assigns each interviewer to administer interviews in four households per day.
• Make sure that data collection in 16 households (or one ward) is completed every day and the team completes the work in a total of 4 wards in 4 days (=64 sampled households).
• Supervises the interview process and resolves any issues, working with the household mobiliser.
• Ensures that the data is collected accurately and uploaded according to the relevant SOPs or guidelines.
• Ensures back-checks of a sub-sample of households selected for repeat interviews are completed in assigned wards for data quality verification.
• Ensures accurate review, validation and submission of electronic data.
• Supports team members in charging mobile phones using a power bank (each team leader will keep a power bank, which should be charged daily and as necessary).
• Collects mobile devices from data collectors at the end of each day for charging and safe keeping.
• Write a short report on the team’s achievements, encountered challenges and recommendations.

Deliverables
Team Lead:

• Household enumeration lists with GPS coordinates for all enumerated and skipped households, submitted to the coordinator for remote household sampling per ward.
• Complete, accurate and validated electronic interview data uploaded to the SurveyCTO server from all 16 sampled households per ward per day.
• Back-check interview data from assigned households in randomly selected wards for data quality verification, uploaded to the SurveyCTO server.
• Short field report covering team achievements, challenges encountered and recommendations, submitted within two days of completing fieldwork.

Qualifications and Experience
Team Leader:

• A minimum of a BSc or HND in a health-related discipline and social sciences.
• At least 2-3 years’ experience in coordinating or conducting household surveys.
• Experience in electronic data collection tools such as SurveyCTO or ODK.
• Demonstrated report-writing skills in English.
• Excellent knowledge of the Yoruba and/or Ijaw language
