Job Summary
- The Baggage Scanner Operator is responsible for operating baggage screening equipment and conducting security screening of luggage, parcels, personal belongings, and other items entering the hotel premises to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees, visitors, contractors, and hotel assets.
- The role helps prevent the introduction of prohibited, dangerous, or unauthorized items into the hotel while maintaining a welcoming, courteous, and professional guest experience consistent with the standards of a superior luxury hotel.
- The Baggage Scanner Operator works closely with Security Operatives, CCTV Operatives, Front Office, Concierge, and other operational departments to support access control, loss prevention, emergency preparedness, and the overall security strategy of the hotel.
Responsibilities
Baggage Screening Operations:
- Operate X-ray baggage scanning machines and other approved security screening equipment.
- Screen all luggage, handbags, parcels, packages, and personal belongings entering designated hotel access points.
- Identify prohibited, suspicious, or potentially dangerous items in accordance with hotel security policies and applicable regulations.
- Conduct secondary manual inspections where required and in accordance with approved procedures.
- Ensure all screening activities are carried out professionally, efficiently, and respectfully.
Access Control & Security Screening:
- Assist in controlling access to hotel premises by ensuring all persons and baggage comply with security screening requirements.
- Verify that all visitors, contractors, suppliers, and delivery personnel comply with hotel security procedures.
- Monitor entry points for suspiciousbehaviouror unauthorized access.
- Prevent prohibited items from being brought into the hotel.
- Escalate security concerns immediately to the Security Supervisor or Chief Security Officer.
Guest Service & Hospitality:
- Welcome guests courteously while conducting security screening.
- Explain screening procedures politely and professionally.
- Maintain a friendly, respectful, and non-intrusive approach during inspections.
- Assist guests requiring special attention, including elderlypersons,personswith disabilities, and VIPs, while maintaining security protocols.
- Ensure screening procedures do not unnecessarily delay guest entry.
Security Incident Response:
- Respond promptly to alarms generated by screening equipment.
- Isolate suspicious baggage or prohibited items in accordance with established procedures.
- Notify Security Supervisors immediately of any suspicious findings.
- Support emergency response procedureswhererequired.
- Preserve the integrity of potential evidence until relieved by authorized personnel.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Conduct routine operational checks on baggage scanning equipment before each shift.
- Ensure scanning machines and related equipment are functioning properly.
- Report equipment faults or malfunctions immediately.
- Maintain cleanliness and proper care of screening equipment.
- Coordinate with the Facility Manager or approved service providers for equipment maintenance when necessary.
Documentation & Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of screening activities, incidents, and equipment checks.
- Record prohibited items detected and actions taken.
- Complete incident reports for unusual occurrences.
- Maintainvisitorand screening logs where required.
- Ensure proper documentation is submitted at the end of each shift.
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance:
- Comply with all health, safety, and security policies.
- Follow safe operating procedures when using screening equipment.
- Observe occupational health and safety requirements.
- Report safety hazards and operational risks promptly.
- Participate in emergency drills and security exercises.
Teamwork & Communication:
- Work closely with Security Operatives, CCTV Operatives, Concierge, Front Office, and other departments.
- Communicate effectively during security incidents.
- Attend security briefings and departmental meetings.
- Support colleagues during busy operational periods.
- Maintain positive working relationships across departments.
Confidentiality & Professional Conduct:
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding security operations and screening activities.
- Protect guest privacy during screening procedures.
- Handle sensitive security information with discretion.
- Maintain professionalism, integrity, and impartialityat all times.
- Uphold the hotel's code of conduct and ethical standards.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement:
- Comply with hotel security policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Participate in mandatory security training and refresherprogrammes.
- Maintain knowledge of current security screening procedures and prohibited items.
- Recommend improvements to baggage screening processes where appropriate.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Security Department.
Requirements
Education:
- Minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or equivalent.
- National Diploma (ND) in Security Management, Criminology, Public Administration, ora relateddiscipline is an added advantage.
Experience
- 1–3 yearsof experience in security screening, access control, aviation security, hotel security, or a similar environment.
- Experience operating X-ray baggage scanners is highly desirable.
- Experience in a luxury hotel or hospitality environment is an added advantage.
