Job Title: Senior Safety Engineer (DW)

Location: Lagos

Job Summary

  • The Senior Safety Engineer is responsible for providing technical safety engineering support to ensure the safe design, operation, modification, and abandonment of oil and gas facilities. The role focuses on process safety, technological risk management, major hazard prevention, and regulatory compliance through the implementation of company and statutory safety standards.
  • The successful candidate will lead safety engineering studies, risk assessments, barrier management initiatives, and support operational assets to ensure the integrity of critical safety systems and compliance with Nigerian and international regulations.

Key Responsibilities
Safety Engineering:

  • Provide technical safety engineering support for facility design, operations, modifications, and decommissioning activities.
  • Review and develop safety engineering documentation in line with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support safety engineering studies during FEED, Basic Engineering, and Detailed Engineering phases.
  • Review engineering documents including:
    • P&IDs
    • ESD Logic
    • Fire & Gas Cause and Effect Matrix
    • Active & Passive Fire Protection
    • Fire & Gas Detection Systems
    • Escape & Evacuation Routes
    • Hazardous Area Classification
    • Safety Layouts
    • Flare Radiation Studies

Process Safety & Risk Management:

  • Lead and facilitate process safety studies including:
    • HAZID
    • HAZOP
    • BowTie Analysis
    • Hazard Analysis (HAZAN)
    • Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA)
  • Conduct Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments for Safety Instrumented Systems.
  • Perform fire, explosion, toxic and flammable gas consequence modelling using PHAST software.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC), Request for Modification (RFM), and Downgraded Situation (DGS) assessments.
  • Prepare technical safety input for operational derogations.

Major Hazard & Barrier Management:

  • Support implementation of Technological Risk Management requirements.
  • Lead Safety and Environmental Critical Element (SECE) identification workshops.
  • Develop and monitor barrier management programs for Major Accident Hazard prevention.
  • Develop risk reduction measures for technological risks.
  • Monitor barrier performance through dashboards and verification exercises.
  • Deliver Process Safety and Major Risk awareness training across operational assets.
  • Prepare process safety communications and awareness materials.

Operational Support:

  • Review and update facility Safety Concepts.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Operational Safety Cases in compliance with NUPRC requirements.
  • Provide process safety support to Engineering, Construction & Projects (ECP), Operational Assets, and Joint Venture partners.
  • Ensure safety engineering compliance throughout facility lifecycle activities.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Timely completion of safety engineering studies and risk assessments.
  • Compliance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Successful implementation of technological risk management programs.
  • Effective management of major accident hazards and critical barriers.
  • Timely delivery of Operational Safety Cases and safety documentation.
  • Increased process safety awareness and barrier integrity across operating assets.

Requirements
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Master's Degree in Safety Engineering or a related field is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 12 years' experience in the Oil & Gas industry.
  • At least 7 years' experience as a:
    • Process Safety Engineer
    • Technical Safety Engineer
    • Loss Prevention Engineer
  • Experience supporting brownfield and greenfield oil & gas facilities.
  • Strong understanding of process safety and technological risk management.
