Social Analysis and Action (SAA) Facilitator (Community Volunteer) at African Youths for Peace Development and Empowerment Foundation (AFRYDEV)

AFRYDEV is a humanitarian and development organization with over 10 years of technical experience in design, development and implementation of youths, women and girls focused interventions in Northeast Nigeria. Since 2013, we focus on interventions that improves well- being and influence positive social mobility as part of our vision of change that drives and promotes safe societies where conflict-affected communities are empowered to prevent recruitment and radicalization of women and youths, including their participation in violence extremist activities, conflict, and gender-based violence.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Social Analysis and Action (SAA) Facilitator (Community Volunteer)

Location: Yobe
Reports to: Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant / Economic Recovery and Gender Inclusion Officer
Collaborates with: Wakilan Sauyi Facilitators, community leaders, project field staff, and MEAL team

Project Background

• The African Youth for Peace Development and Empowerment Foundation (AFRYDEV) is a leading Nigerian non-governmental organization with over 13 years of technical experience designing and implementing high-impact interventions in peacebuilding, governance, protection, and socio-economic development across Northeast Nigeria (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states).
• AFRYDEV has been specifically selected to lead and implement the critical Governance, Economic Recovery, and Gender Responsiveness components of RESILAC 2.
• This reflects AFRYDEV’s proven track record in strengthening local governance systems, creating sustainable livelihoods for youth and women, and championing gender-transformative approaches in fragile contexts.
• AFRYDEV through Care Nigeria directly addresses the deep-rooted vulnerabilities identified in the project's territorial diagnostics, including weak local authority capacity, high youth unemployment severe gender inequalities and fragile social cohesion. Working across two Local Government Areas of Yobe State.

Role Overview

• The SAA Facilitator is a community-based volunteer responsible for facilitatingSocial Analysis and Action (SAA) dialogue forums a gender-transformative approach that engages community members (mixed groups, women-only, men-only, youth) in critical reflection on social and gender norms, power relations, and structural barriers that hinder access to services, opportunities, and equal participation.
• The facilitator leads community-level reflection sessions, action planning, and follow-up activities.

Key Responsibilities
Facilitation of SAA Dialogue Forums:

• Facilitate bi-weekly (twice per month) SAA dialogue sessions with specified community groups (e.g., mixed adult groups, women-only groups, men-only groups, youth groups) following the approved SAA curriculum and methodology.
• Guide participants through structured reflection exercises (body mapping, power analysis, social norm mapping, root cause analysis) to explore how norms and power dynamics affect daily life, access to resources, and well-being.
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental space where participants feel comfortable sharing experiences, questioning assumptions, and challenging harmful practices.
• Adapt facilitation style and language to suit the literacy level and cultural context of the group.

Action Planning and Community-Led Change:

• Support each SAA group to develop a simple community action plan that identifies practical steps the group can take to address identified norms or barriers using their own existing resources.
• Facilitate follow-up sessions to review action plan progress, celebrate successes, and problem-solve challenges.
• Encourage groups to implement small, visible actions (e.g., awareness campaigns, role plays for community events, dialogues with local leaders) to create wider community change.

Community Mobilization and Engagement:

• Work with the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant to identify and select SAA group participants, ensuring representation of women, men, youth, PWDs, and marginalized subgroups.
• Engage traditional leaders, religious leaders, and other community gatekeepers to gain support for SAA processes and action plans.
• Participate in community sensitization events to explain the purpose of SAA and recruit participants.

Monitoring and Documentation:

• Complete session observation checklists, attendance sheets, and brief session summary reports after each SAA dialogue.
• Document shifts in attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors reported by participants over time (positive or challenging).
• Identify participants who may need additional support or referrals (e.g., GBV survivors, individuals in severe distress) and refer appropriately using established referral pathways.

Coordination and Reporting:

• Attend monthly facilitator coordination meetings led by the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant.
• Submit bi-weekly activity reports and attendance records to the Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant.
• Share success stories, testimonials, and photographs (with informed consent) for project documentation and reporting.

Qualifications and Experience
Education and Literacy:

• Minimum of Secondary School Education (SSCE) or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write, and keep simple records in English and/or Hausa.

Experience:

• Previous experience as a community volunteer, peer educator, facilitator, or community health worker (preferred but not required).
• Experience participating in SAA, gender dialogues, or similar reflective processes is an advantage.
• Must be a respected and trusted member of the target community.

Skills and Competencies:

• Excellent listening, questioning, and facilitation skills.
• Ability to manage group dynamics and difficult conversations with sensitivity.
• Non-judgmental, respectful, and inclusive attitude.
• Basic record-keeping and report-writing skills.
• Willingness to learn and apply participatory facilitation methods.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive disclosures appropriately.

Language:

• Fluency in Hausa (spoken and written) is required.
• Basic English is an advantage.
• Knowledge of Kanuri or other local languages is a plus.

Key Working Relationships:

• Internal:Gender & Social Inclusion Assistant, Economic Recovery and Gender Inclusion Officer, Wakilan Sauyi Facilitators, MEAL staff, project field staff.
• External:SAA group participants, community members, traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth groups, women’s groups, and relevant referral partners (GBV service providers, health facilities, protection actors).

Time Commitment and Remuneration

• Commitment:Approximately 30–35 minutes weekly facilitation session, plus preparation, reporting, and meetings).
• Duration:Up to 12 months (renewable based on performance and project need).
• Remuneration: This is a volunteer position with a modest honorarium/stipend for each facilitated session, transportation allowance for meetings, and recognition as a community volunteer.
