Reports to: Mechanical Integrity Engineer / Inspection Authority
Supervises: Valve technicians and test-bench personnel, as assigned

Role Purpose

  • Inspect, witness, and document the removal, overhaul, testing, certification, preservation, and reinstallation of pressure safety and relief valves so that each device is traceable, correctly set, leak-tight, and fit for its designated service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify valve identification, tag number, service, set pressure, inlet/outlet data, due date, and maintenance history against the approved register and data sheet.
  • Witness as-found testing and record pop/set pressure, seat leakage, blowdown, and observed condition before dismantling where practicable.
  • Inspect bodies, bonnets, nozzles, discs, spindles, springs, bellows, seals, threads, flanges, and internal components for damage, wear, corrosion, or contamination.
  • Review repair, machining, replacement-part, cleaning, lapping, assembly, and torque activities against approved procedures and OEM requirements.
  • Confirm test bench, gauges, pressure sources, media, adapters, and measurement devices are suitable and within calibration.
  • Witness final set-pressure, seat-tightness, blowdown, and functional tests and ensure results meet applicable tolerances.
  • Verify sealing, tagging, paint coding, preservation, transport protection, installation orientation, isolation removal, and flange/bolt integrity.
  • Review and accept test certificates, repair reports, calibration records, material/part records, and status updates in the relief-device register.
  • Raise NCRs or quarantine devices with failed tests, unapproved parts, traceability gaps, or unsafe condition and escalate critical availability risks.

Key Performance Measures

  • Devices tested and returned before due date
  • As-left results within approved tolerance
  • Certificates and register updates accurate and complete
  • Failed devices quarantined and risks escalated promptly
  • Zero incorrect tagging, set pressure, or service reinstatement

Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Requirements:

  • HND or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Materials, Instrumentation, or a related engineering discipline; experienced technicians may qualify with equivalent competence evidence.
  • Typically 5 or more years of pressure-relief-device inspection, valve maintenance, test-bench, or mechanical-integrity experience.
  • Working knowledge of valve construction, set-pressure testing, seat leakage, calibration, tagging, preservation, and certification.
  • Ability to interpret data sheets, P&IDs, maintenance history, test procedures, and acceptance tolerances.
  • High attention to traceability and safety-critical documentation.

Preferred Certifications and Standards Knowledge:

  • API 576/527 training or relevant OEM/pressure-relief-device certification is preferred.
  • ASNT/ISO 9712 Level II is advantageous where NDT forms part of the inspection scope.
