Job Overview
- The Locum Medical Laboratory Scientist typically works in the laboratory to test various samples provided.
- The role entails sample analysis and the findings support the medical diagnosis of clients.
- Essentially, the Locum Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible to ensure that clients and partners receive timely, accurate results for their ordered laboratory tests while adhering to the industry and organisation’s standard, quality, procedures, policies, protocols and regulations during the analysis of samples.
Job Description
- The Locum Medical Laboratory Scientist role requires a good knowledge and understanding of clinical work, compliance and adherence to standards and procedures, quality assurance and quality control.
- The role requires a good knowledge in industry standard practice of testing samples, examining samples, and assessing the accuracy of the test results and monitoring of quality control data.
- The role requires the skills to operate, maintain and clean modern laboratory equipment and to integrate findings and patients’ records into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- The role requires a good understanding of laboratory procedures, laboratory work flow organisation and coordination with patients, and other staff.
- The role contributes to supportingthe operations and functioning of the Laboratory inperforming basic, complex and specialised tests for diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of diseases. The role also contributes to the organisations’ policies and commitments towards quality assurance.
- The Locum Medical Laboratory Scientist will work as part of the Laboratory Team while interfacing with front office team and the maintenance staff.

Working Conditions
- The work of the LOCUM Medical Laboratory Scientist is conducted essentially in the laboratory set up in accordance with industry standards.
- Hence, The duties of the role are carried out in person and not remotely.
- The working environment is an ideal and standard laboratory health care service provider setup environment.
- The LOCUM Medical Laboratory Scientist works 2 days/week at the Laboratory address in Jabi, Abuja probably with short occasional out of office to client’s residence or office for sample collection.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
The LOCUM Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for the following specific duties and responsibilities:
Analysis of samples:
- Perform phlebotomy work, collect sample following standard procedure without causing undue discomfort to the patient
- Receive and conduct a pre‐analytical processing of samples collected following organisation’s sample rejection or acceptance criteria
- Use, access information and record information in the LMIS (Laboratory Information Management System)
- Carry out laboratory analysis on samples following standard operating procedures and measures, and laboratory policies that are compliant with industry standards and organisation’s requirements
- Follow organisation’s procedures and protocols for documenting and reporting tests findings
Laboratory equipment use and maintenance:
- Read and comprehend user manuals to ensure familiarity with the functioning of laboratory equipment and machines
- Watch indicators to ensure that equipment and machines are working properly
- Support the laboratory team in following the servicing policies and compliance policies for operating, cleaning, calibrating and maintenance of the laboratory equipment and machines
- Describe efficiently, equipment and machine failure to the laboratory staff and team to enable prompt troubleshooting and repairs
- Carry out cleaning and maintenance of work area
Compliance and adherence with procedures, standards, policies, regulations, operations and quality:
- Practice and maintain quality assurance and quality control measures and activities
- Adhere to all safety and hygiene measures and procedures, infection control policies and procedures including biomedical waste disposal protocols
- Follow organisation’s operating standards, procedures and protocols for analysis of samples
- Comply with organisation’s confidentiality policies
- Follow organisation’s regulations, policies and standards towards ensuring processes, procedures and practices are compliant with industry standards and the requirements of the organisation.
Communication and teamwork:
- Use proper manner for greeting and interacting with patients
- Respect client’s need for privacy
- Work well under pressure and communicate effectively with the patients
- Be up to date with all the tests and service products knowledge and information, policies and procedures followed in the organisation
- Communicate, share information and collaborate with other team members and organisation staff to enable efficient delivery of work that meet requirements of the role and the organization’s standard of performance
- Adhere to organisation’s codes of conduct while performing duties
Job Requirements
- The nature of the work of the LOCUM Medical Laboratory Scientist is both analytical and technical hence requires a mix of specific requirements.
Minimum Educational Requirement:
- Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (with valid practicing MLSCN license) or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (with experience of minimum three years in medical laboratory work, with a valid practicing MLSCN license)
Preferred Technical Training:
- Post NYSC 1-2 year(s) work experience
Additional Requirements:
- Experience in phlebotomy and sample collection, Experience in the use of laboratory equipment.
- Experience in the use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or hospital software.
- Experience with compliance to industry standards and regulations, quality assurance and quality control.
- Experience with applying laboratory procedures. Experience with biohazard waste disposal and following safety guidelines.
- Experience with listening, reading and understanding information presented in writing, spoken words and in digital format.
- Experience in using logic and reasoning.
- Experience with trouble shooting laboratory machines. Experience in planning, prioritizing, organising work and time management.
