Job Title: Senior Medical Officer, Paediatrics
Location: Abuja
About the role
- The role involves providing experienced clinical care in paediatrics, managing patients largely independently across out-patient and in-patient settings, supporting consultant-led care, and supervising and supporting junior medical officers within the paediatrics service.
Responsibilities
- Provide largely independent assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in paediatrics, appropriate to the level of the role, referring complex cases appropriately.
- Support consultant-led clinics, ward rounds and procedures.
- Supervise and support medical officers and trainees, contributing to their development, and participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and patient-safety activities.
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical records and current MDCN registration/licence in line with internal clinical policy.
- Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team, coordinating care with other services and supporting managed-care/HMO processes through evidence-based, cost-effective practice.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) from a recognised institution.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of post-NYSC clinical experience, including progression through Medical Officer grades. Substantial post-registration clinical experience, including experience at medical/dental officer level.
Required skills:
- Demonstrable competence in the independent clinical management of patients in paediatrics, and in supporting and supervising junior medical staff.
- Strong clinical knowledge of paediatrics and the ability to manage most cases independently.
- Understanding of clinical governance, audit and patient safety.
- Sound clinical record-keeping and competent use of hospital clinical systems.
- Effective communication with patients, families and colleagues.
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
Nice to Have:
- Evidence of progress toward a postgraduate fellowship (e.g. primary or part examinations of the National Postgraduate Medical College or the West African College).
- Additional training relevant to the area of practice (e.g. life support, clinical skills, quality improvement).
- Experience in a multi-specialist hospital, corporate hospital network, HMO-facing health system, public-sector hospital or large institutional healthcare environment.
