Job Summary

  • We are seeking a competent, detail-oriented, and highly motivated medical laboratory scientist (medical laboratory technician) to join our healthcare team. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of laboratory tests that support the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of diseases. This role requires a high level of technical competence, analytical thinking, and commitment to quality standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
  • The ideal candidate must demonstrate professionalism, maintain strict quality control procedures, operate laboratory equipment efficiently, and work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver excellent patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, receive, label, process, and prepare patient specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform laboratory investigations in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct tests in the areas of:
    • Haematology
    • Chemical Pathology
    • Medical Microbiology
    • Histopathology (where applicable)
    • Blood Transfusion Science
    • Immunology and Serology
    • Molecular Diagnostics (where available)
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory findings before releasing results.
  • Ensure accuracy, precision, and reliability of all laboratory test results.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Perform routine quality control (QC) and participate in quality assurance (QA) programs.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, registers, and electronic documentation.
  • Verify patient identification and specimen integrity before testing.
  • Report critical laboratory values promptly to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, laboratory safety guidelines, and waste disposal procedures.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of laboratory reagents, chemicals, and specimens.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory and report shortages of reagents and consumables.
  • Participate in equipment validation, maintenance schedules, and inventory management.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.
  • Participate in laboratory accreditation activities and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Attend departmental meetings, continuing professional development (CPD) programs, and mandatory training sessions.
  • Perform any other laboratory-related duties assigned by the hospital management.

Required Qualifications
Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BMLS/BMLSc) in Medical Laboratory Science from a recognized institution.
  • Current practicing license issued by the relevant professional regulatory authority.
  • Registration with the appropriate medical laboratory science regulatory body.
  • Valid annual practicing license.
  • 1–3 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience is an added advantage.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with ethical standards.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, weekends, public holidays, and emergency call duties when required.

Technical Knowledge:
Candidates should have knowledge of:

  • Laboratory quality assurance and quality control principles.
  • Specimen collection, handling, preservation, and transportation.
  • Clinical laboratory methodologies and testing procedures.
  • Laboratory instrumentation and preventive maintenance.
  • Biosafety and biosecurity guidelines.
  • Medical laboratory ethics and professional conduct.
  • Infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Laboratory accreditation standards (ISO 15189 or equivalent).
