Job Title: Head of Finance (HMO)

Location: Lagos
Reports to: MD/BOD

Role Overview

  • The Head of Finance will provide strategic leadership and direction for all financial activities of the HMO.
  • The role is responsible for ensuring sound financial management, regulatory compliance, accurate reporting, effective cash flow management, and supporting the organization’s growth and sustainability objectives within the Nigerian health insurance sector.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the company’s financial strategy in alignment with overall business goals.
  • Provide accurate, timely, and insightful financial analysis and advice to the Executive Management Board.
  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning processes.
  • Monitor financial performance against targets and recommend corrective actions where necessary.

Financial Operations & Control:

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, and treasury functions.
  • Ensure robust internal controls, financial policies, and procedures are in place and consistently applied.
  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, investments, and banking relationships effectively.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts and statutory financial statements.

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:

  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant Nigerian regulations, including those of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and other regulatory bodies.
  • Oversee timely filing of tax returns, statutory returns, and regulatory reports.
  • Coordinate external audits and maintain strong relationships with external auditors and regulators.
  • Ensure adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and other applicable accounting standards.

Risk Management & Governance:

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks, including credit, operational, and liquidity risks.
  • Support the development and monitoring of enterprise risk management frameworks.
  • Ensure strong corporate governance practices within the finance function.

Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team to high performance standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments (Operations, Claims, Underwriting, Sales, and IT).
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with banks, insurers, investors, and other external stakeholders.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Accuracy and timeliness of financial reports
  • Achievement of budget and profitability targets
  • Effective cash flow and working capital management
  • Regulatory compliance and clean audit outcomes
  • Strength and performance of the Finance team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field. A master’s degree (MBA, MSc Finance) is an added advantage.
  • Professional qualification is mandatory: ACA, ACCA, CFA, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 12 years progressive experience in finance, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (preferably within insurance, HMO, healthcare, or financial services).
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws, NHIA regulations, and the health insurance industry is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in financial strategy, budgeting, financial reporting, and team leadership.

  • Strong understanding of risk management and internal controls.
