Street Child is a UK charity working to protect vulnerable children and improve access to education in some of the poorest communities in the world. We work in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nepal and since November 2016, Street Child has been involved in the Humanitarian response in North East Nigeria.
Street Child works in the fields of education, child protection and livelihoods, working to deliver sustainable solutions and create maximum impact. Our work combines counselling, family mediation, business support, school building, teacher training and child protection. We were a key player in the Ebola crisis and led the global response for children orphaned by Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia. We deliver all our programmes through local partners and, since 2008, together we have built/renovated over 200 schools and are now helping to educate over 40,000 young people.

Job Title: Education Specialist
Location: Lagos
Role Purpose and Overview
- The Education Specialist will lead the design, delivery, and quality assurance of teaching and learning interventions to improve learning outcomes and retention for children in Lagos.
- The role will strengthen teacher capacity through high-quality training, coaching, mentoring, and performance monitoring, ensuring effective implementation of inclusive accelerated learning approaches.
- Working closely with a team of Learning Advisors, the Education Specialist will support teachers to address learning loss, improve classroom practice, and enable all children—particularly the most vulnerable—to enrol, remain in, and succeed at school.
- With a strong commitment to safeguarding and child protection, ensuring that all interventions promote safe, inclusive, and protective learning environments and comply with organisational safeguarding standards and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Design & Quality Assurance:
- Design and oversee accelerated learning and street corner targeted instruction implementation, focusing on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for out-of-school and in-school children.
- Develop and adapt training modules, session plans, and teacher manuals in close consultation with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB).
- Ensure all instructional content is aligned with state and national curriculum standards and inclusive education policies.
Teacher Training & Coaching:
- Develop initial teacher training programme, followed by regular refresher sessions and on-the-job coaching.
- Introduce and monitor the use of targeted instruction in classrooms, grouping students by learning level and adapting instruction accordingly.
- Facilitate termly Communities of Practice meetings for teachers to share best practices and address challenges.
- Train and coach teachers to implement effective, high-impact teaching strategies, including explicit teaching, use of examples, and multiple exposures.
- Conduct regular student assessments using EGRA, EGMA and upper primary assessment tools.
- Support lesson planning, classroom assessments, and instructional delivery.
- Establish and facilitate Communities of Practice (COP) for peer learning, classroom observation, and targeted feedback among teachers.
Inclusive Education:
- Embed inclusive pedagogies in classrooms, addressing language, gender, and disability needs.
- Collaborate with Learning Managers and School Management Committees to institutionalise inclusive practices and infrastructure adaptations.
- Support the Evidence and Evaluation Unit in collecting, analysing, and using data to inform instructional improvements.
- Collaborate with the Evidence and Evaluation Unit to use real-time data for continuous instructional improvement.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with partners, school leaders, community officers, and local education authorities to ensure effective implementation and sustainability of interventions.
- Advocate for the adoption of proven instructional strategies within state systems.
- Provide accurate verbal and written reporting for impact investor and Lagos SUBEB.
Requirements
Education / Qualifications:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Education, Curriculum Development, International Development, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Master's Degree in a relevant discipline.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Experience in teacher professional development, curriculum implementation, and improving learning outcomes, ideally in diverse or low-resource settings.
- Experience designing and delivering teacher training, coaching, and mentoring programmes.
- Knowledge of accelerated learning, foundational learning, inclusive education, and competency-based teaching approaches.
- Experience supporting the implementation of education programmes in schools and communities.
- Strong understanding of achieving learning outcomes.
- Experience using digital data to monitor progress and improve programme quality.
- Experience working with government, schools, communities, and other education stakeholders.
- Experience of Teaching at the right level (TaRL)
- Experience of assessing children using EGRA/ EGMA
- Knowledge of Lagos State and neighbouring areas.
- Experience working with Lagos SUBEB and/or the state education system.
- Experience delivering payment-by-results programmes.
- Experience meeting donor reporting requirements.
