Job Title: Manager, Instrumentation and Automation Technical Lead (Oil & Gas)

Locations: Lagos and Port Harcourt, Rivers
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Instrumentation and Automation Technical Lead is responsible for leading the design, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of instrumentation, control, and automation systems across oil and gas operations.
  • This role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of field instruments, PLC/DCS/SCADA systems, and associated automation infrastructure in compliance with industry standards and company policies.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership:

  • Lead instrumentation and automation activities for upstream, midstream, or downstream oil and gas facilities.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineers, technicians, and contractors.
  • Review and approve instrumentation and automation designs, specifications, and technical deliverables.
  • Ensure alignment with project requirements, operational standards, and regulatory codes.

Instrumentation Systems:

  • Oversee installation, calibration, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of field instruments such as pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters, analyzers, control valves, and shutdown devices.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation faults and ensure minimal downtime.
  • Review loop drawings, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, cause and effect charts, and instrument index.

Automation and Control Systems:

  • Lead work on PLC, DCS, SCADA, SIS, and related control systems.
  • Support programming, configuration, testing, and integration of automation systems.
  • Ensure cybersecurity, reliability, and system integrity for control networks.
  • Coordinate software backup, version control, and change management activities.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure instrumentation and automation systems comply with international standards such as IEC, ISA, API, and applicable local regulations.
  • Support HAZOP, SIL, SAT, FAT, and risk assessment activities.
  • Promote safe working practices and participate in incident investigations related to instrumentation or control failures.

Project and Maintenance Support

  • Support capital projects, brownfield modifications, and plant upgrades from concept through commissioning.
  • Prepare technical documents including scopes of work, datasheets, method statements, and commissioning procedures.
  • Coordinate with maintenance, operations, engineering, and vendors to resolve technical issues.
  • Monitor asset performance and implement reliability improvements and preventive maintenance strategies.

Team and Vendor Management:

  • Supervise contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams during execution and commissioning.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals and technical bids.
  • Provide training and mentoring to engineers and technicians.

Requirements

  • Education Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Electronics, or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the industry. Location: Lagos and Port Harcourt.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of PLC, DCS, SCADA, SIS, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Hands-on experience with calibration, loop checking, FAT/SAT, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with hazardous area requirements and process safety systems.
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as ISA, IEC, API, NFPA, and IEC 61511/61508.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure in operational and shutdown environments.
  • Strong coordination and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Certifications

  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
  • ISA, IEC, or functional safety certifications
  • PMP or project management certification
  • HSE or process safety training

Working Conditions:

  • May require offshore/onshore fieldwork, plant visits, shutdown support, and on-call availability.
  • May involve exposure to hazardous environments and travel to operational sites.
