News Editor for an Education Multimedia Startup - Edufrica

Edufrica - We are a new education multimedia startup in Abuja looking for a young and motivated individual to join our editorial team and edit stories from journalists covering news related to education, technology and entertainment in Nigeria and Africa.

We wish to fill the following position of:

Job Title: News Editor

Location: Nationwide

Job Description

• The ideal candidate should be a team player and a self-starter. The job is flexible, which means you can work from home many days in a week, provided you get the job done. The salary is competitive.
• You should be able/willing to work in Abuja, Lagos or Jos in the next few years. We are happy to start with you working from other Nigerian cities for the next 2-3 years.
• Please only apply if you meet the requirements. We will train you if we offer you a position but we expect that you prove competence. We will only contact those shortlisted for interview.
• Responsibilities (must NOT necessarily do all these BUT should be able to do most)
• Coordinate a team of journalists in different cities and edit and post stories in a timely manner
• Work with journalists to decide weekly assignments, and help them with practical guides where necessary
• Maintain a close working relationship with potential news sources, and update our team of reporters as news break.
• Develop updates to live stories throughout the day, with several deadlines built into the work week
• Create online videos and post them to Youtube (NOT core responsibility)
• Write articles, take photographs or shoot video as necessary to tell a story (NOT core job responsibility)

Requirements

• Be a self-starter. We are all busy and don’t expect to tell anyone to do their job
• Be a fast learner - must be demonstrated
• Have a good knowledge of writing for the web
• Have a solid understanding of the English language grammar
• Have the ability to post breaking news
• Must be able to write clearly and succinctly on a variety of topics (you can't edit what you don't understand)
• Basic knowledge of web publishing tools and/or the ability to learn new technology quickly
• Proficient used of Microsoft Office and some knowledge of PowerPoint
• Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to meet deadline in a fast paced environment
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• BSc/BA in news/media/journalism discipline or related experience
• Previous experience not necessarily required but must be able to prove competency
