Nigerian FG Scraps UTME, NECO, NAPEP, others

Posted on Thu 04th Apr, 2013 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (37 comments)

Indications emerged last night that the Federal Government may have resolved to scrap some of its agencies in line with the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on the Rationalization and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies following the completion of study of its White Paper Committee report.

Among those scrapped are Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE), National Examination Council (NECO), Public Complaints Commission, National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and the Fiscal Mobilization and Allocation Commission among others.

The Oronsaye committee had recommended the abolition of 38 agencies, the merger of 52 and the reversion of 14 to departments in the ministries from which they were carved out, a move the committee argued would save the government more than N862 billion between 2012 and 2015 should its proposal be adopted.

A reliable government source confirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo and selected senior aides of the president met twice and eventually took decisions, which included the scrapping of some agencies and merging of others.

Another source revealed that the with the scrapping of the UTME, individual universities in the country would conduct their own admission examinations and admit students while the Joint Matriculation and Examination Board will set and ensure compliance to standards as it acts as the clearing house.

For sure this will reduce the rate of corruption in afor mentioned Fed Gov't agencies. The prominency of exams malpractice in NECO and JAMB will cut-tail a bit. on the contrary, the rate of unemployment will increas.Universities will make admision processes to be more complicated

That is not a good decision, in a country like ours where unemployment is a serious probem, government decisions should be contributing to reducing it's rate instead of making decisions that will increase it. How can our leaders make decisions without considering those that will be affected, they are only concern with how many billions can be saved to enrich their children accounts and not how many people will be thrown into suffering. God have mercy on NIGERIA

This forum is definitely 4 kids and undergraduates I think. Otherwise, no exposed person here.
Why havent I seen a comment that describes the benefit of cutting down on wasteful spending on government numerous 'non-productive" staff??.
Why cant anyone see the benefit of scrapping ministries where workers sleep all day or sell shoes and bags??
Jesus!!

I think the president has taken the right decision.Truth is a very bitter pill to swallow.we have an over-bloated civil service in nigeria. people should go to the private sector and do something with their lives and stop collecting salaries which they are not working for.there is a need for restructuring in the economy.

this decision will only send more people to d already over bloated job market.the agencies that will be merged should find a way of absorbing those oda staff.

The leaders of this country have refused to carry the poor masses along and we are practising democracy. The rate of unemployment increases on daily basis, still they are not bothered. What is the 862 billion going to be used for? With due respect ,dont give our young graduates fishes, rather teach them how to catch fishes. Create employment opportunity and be rest assured that the security problem of this country will be a thing of the past

This step the government has taken is unhealthy. The goverment should cut down the cost of governance. Can we quantify in monetary terms the amount spent on the legislative & executive arm of the goverment? Except they are ready to absorb members of staff of these scraped agencies into other ministries, the rate of unemployment will be alarming.Jonathan!!! put on your thinking cap.

Now that Nigeria is striving towards a good and sustainable leadership, now comes a big crises. The issue of unemployment is still biting hard on citizens and our leaders are trying to create more hardship on her citizens by rendering them jobless through the politically master minded Oronsaye committee's outcome. Is it these selected agencies and commissions that are responsible for the problems of this country? Mr president should please, go back to his GOD in prayers and he should always remember where he himself is coming from and also remember his promises to Nigerians when he becomes President.

@ abit, you need to know that it is better that the agencies remain than for them to be scrapped and the saved billions to end in the pockets of the greedy politicians. Don't forget petroleum subsidy issue.

Wth due respect, honestly Jonathan is confused. Is it not clear? Do u people still need more sound but dead policies and decisions to confirm this. U can only test ur policies and decisions by d results they produce. Since Nigeria's problem is that of saving, has he 4goten dat 862 billion is just a small fraction compared to the suposedly saved ova 1.7 trillion from fuel subsidy removal? dat is 2dy creating innumberable jobs on papers. Pls, tell jonathan 2 wake up 4rm his slumber. Else, disaster is inevitable.

A corrupt free society is tantamount to our development, but the desire of our so called leaders even the progressives to acquire weath at all cost is a detriment, catastrophe, and even 'tsunami' to a nation building. Is scraping some agencies the best solution to our problem, or huge amount of money that is entring the purse of our legislative and executive arm of government?
Instead of scraping those agencies, why not sanitize them to eradicate corruption and save some money?
If Goodluck Jonathan administration should reason to scrap as they meant to do, definitely our problem is leadership problem.
Regarding UTME, it has no meaning anymore. Post UTME has already taken its place. Hence passing Jamb alone does not qualify you to be admitted into university.

mr president or whatever the called you i think you and oronsanye has ran out of ideas, imagine an Academician supporting the idea of scrapping Neco which is an alternative to waec.instead of mr president to look into reducing the cost of goverance and excess amount of money allocated to political office holders, reducing unemployment to the bearest minimum he is busy talking trash. Does he know the implication of what he is trying to do, what about those with Neco certificates already what will be their fate. oga jona have a rethink over this

I am so surprised that most nigerians can be so myopic when it comes to national debate such as this. How can you all be one-sided in your argument against your president. The man is right and the reform should start from somewhere.Infact I am more intrigued by those graduates who claim to have neco certificate and are still thinking that their neco cert will be invalid. It is not done anywhere.Regarding those that will be effected by the policy change, they should not think that they will die just because they are laid off , they can do better things with their lives in the private sector.Remember dangote,Otedola,Adenuga, etc they never worked for govt. Many nigerians think without govt job they can not be rich and that is why they can pay bribe of N400K to get govt jobs. They are all lazy people who want to reap where they do not sow.We should instead pray for the president for God's direction and stop castigating your president.remember there was a time in this country when we had only Waec and intelligent and hardworking candidates were passing. We should remove sentiment and let us face reality.it could be a way of raising the standard of education in nigeria.

Its time for us Nigerians to also put on our thinking caps and live beyond the meager means our government is making available to us. If you are a graduate and you think you are blessed with any form of skill irrespective of if you made a 3rd class or above 37 years, you can make a reasonable sum monthly ranging from N50k and above by sending Name, skill, age, qualification to perfectribsinc@yahoo.com
