Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) Admissions into Engineering Technician Programmes for the 2017/2018 Academic Session

The Institute of Petroleum Technology, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), which is of international standard, was established by Yaba College of Technology, and its industry partners. Modeled after the various Oil and Gas Intensive Training programmes, its aim is to develop the skills of young Nigerian technicians who are ready for employment in the various sectors of the economy. It offers broad-based continuing education programmes to professionals in the industry. As a technology focused institution, IPTYABATECH offers an excellent range of laboratories, workshops, and specialized equipment for experimental work, testing prototypes, data analysis and Training.

As part of its contribution to local technical manpower development in Nigeria, Institute of Petroleum Technology, Yabatech invites applications for admissions from suitably qualified Nigerians wishing to enroll as trainees in the IPTYABATECH Engineering Technician Training Programme (ETTP). The programme is designed to train and develop indigenous manpower to technical competence level required for the Oil and Gas industry and other sectors.

Admissions into Engineering Technician Programmes for the 2017/2018 Academic Session.

Engineering Technician Programmes

• These Technician Programmes of the Institute of Petroleum Technology, Yabatech, rest on general principles and methods of Engineering. It will run on a full-time basis, and taught over duration of 12 calendar months.
• Upon completion of the programme, candidates will have a basic background in Mathematical Science and Basic Engineering subjects, and can apply this knowledge within an area of specialization.
• Candidates will also be able to meet and solve challenges on an Advanced Engineering level outside the area of specialization and in close cooperation with experts from other fields.
• In particular, the candidates will be qualified to participate in the development and management of new technology, methods and principles.

Programme Overview

• The Programme has been specially designed to offer the necessary skills, practical understanding and knowledge to enable progression to employment and further studies
• The Programme covers an extensive range of Engineering undertakings and disciplines within the sector and forms part of our obligation to foundation education
• Candidates will gain comprehensive understanding of the offshore Oil and Gas industry especially the subsea segment .
• Candidates will increase their understanding and practical application of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Instrumentation and Design Engineering Technology
• The course is reviewed regularly to reflect dynamics in the industry environment and the ever changing need of the employers
• The students benefit from excellent industry links coupled with the engagement of experts with the development of course

The modules of each discipline are also available as Continuous Professional Development (CPD) short courses.

Continuous Education and Career Opportunity for Participants

• Those who complete this Engineering programme can take the National Institute for Certificate Technologies (NICET) exam to become certified Technicians.
• Also, graduates of this programme are able to pursue Chartered Engineering Technical status through any of the Institutional professional accreditation bodies.
• Academic progression is also available:
  • Through the Institute’s Advanced Diploma programmes.
  • Through further Engineering studies in any of the Nigerian Universities of choice.
  • Opportunity for employment exist in a wide range of industries, for examples in Offshore Industry, Oil & Gas Industry, Construction, Systems Manufacturing Industry.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must possess any of the following qualifications:

• Ordinary National Diploma or any other higher qualification.
• National Technical Certificate (NTC) or Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) issued by the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) or
• Technicians' Certificate or Ordinary Technicians Diploma (or its equivalent) issued by City and Guild of London Institute; or
• Advanced Level Certificate in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (or its equivalent) issued by IJMB, Cambridge and JUPEB.
• Candidates will take a computer based test and oral interview
• These certificates should have been obtained in any of the above listed or retated discipline of study
• In addition to the above mentioned certificate, O’Ievel credits (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) English Language and one Science subject at not more than two sittings are mandatory

Learning and Assessment Methods

• Candidates will be taught in small sizes
• This method of learning will ensure students are able to maximize their skills through close contact with industry experts
• Industry base individual and group project sessions to teach how to apply Engineering problems which demonstrate a combination of technical specialist and theoretical knowledge necessary for the challenges of the industry
• Learning and assessment would be carried out through course work, workshop, field trips, case study assignments, presentations, practical hand skill, individual & group projects, technical reports and examinations

Designs, Analysis and Stimulations Engineering Softwares

• IPTYABATECH would equip the laboratory with suite of engineering software such as: ONEPLUS, FLEXCOM, PIPEPLAY, PDMS, ORCAFLEX, STADPRO, SACS, DEEPRISER, MICROSOFT PROJECT, PRIMEVERA, AUTOCAD, MATLAB, PIPESIM, OLGA AND INTOOLS

Membership of Professional Bodies

• The programme is City & Guild and SQA accredited, and on successful completion, graduands will be awarded the City and Guild of London Institute and SQA Certificate, in addition to the Yabatech Diploma Certificate
• Candidates will be presented with free students’ membership of Subsea UK; Society of Underwater Technology; Energy Institute: Professional Institute; e.g. Pipeline Engineers; Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining; National Association of Corrosion Engineers; Royal Institution of Naval Architecture; Institution of Engineering and Technology; Safety and Reliability & Society: and Subsea Engineering Society.

• Oil and Gas firms have been consulted in specifying the structure of the programmes and contents of the modules. The involvement of the industry will continue by lecturing on modules and by proposing and assisting with students projects.

Accommodation & Tuition

• Candidates will be accommodated in an approved IPTYABATECH accommodation.
• Candidates will undertake full responsibility for the cost of accommodation for the 12 months period of studies.
• Tuition fee will cover the following:  Course materials (soft & hard copies), field trips, and industry visitation, safety gadgets, Technical body memberships, industry placement and job search support, internet and e-mail services.
