The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is the independent regulatory agency mandated by Government to monitor and regulate the electricity industry in Nigeria. NERC is recruiting to fill the position of:
Job Title: Assistant General Manager, Legal Advisory Services
Job summary
The Assistant General Manager, Legal Advisory Services leads and supervises all staff in the Legal Advisory Services Unit. The job holder will report to the General Manager, Legal, Licensing and Enforcement.
Responsibilities
Ensures all legal instruments, documents of the Commission are properly drafted
Provides legal advice on all matters referred to the Unit including the Commission’s regulations
Ensures that due process is followed in the drafting of all the Commission’s legal instrument
Gives legal opinion in the Division on matters other than Enforcement and ADR
Vets all legal instruments emanating from the Commission or to which the Commission is a party
Ensures that all Regulations of the Commission are gazetted in accordance with the law
Supervises all litigations against the Commission not arising from its functions e.g. Ordinary contracts
Supervises the process for registration of Counsel in the Commissions
Ensures that due process is complied with in the appointment of Counsel
Ensures proper and adequate preparation for Commission’s cases before the Arbitration Tribunals as provided in the contracts
Ensures all subpoenas, resolutions and orders of the Commission arising from non-regulatory activities of the Commission are duly served as instructed
Liaises with Commission’s Counsel in the conduct of all cases involving the Commission
Prepares and reviews motions, briefs and responses to petition
Prepares leases, conveyances and other documents relating to land and property acquisition
Supervises inputs into legal instruments e.g PPA and all other industry agreements
Supervises the monitoring and administration of insurance claims
Prepares training programmes for the Unit in consultation with the GM Legal, Licensing and Enforcement unit

Good grasp of Nigerian law, Nigerian Legal System, court processes
Good case management skills
Must possess a Law degree and be called to the Nigerian Bar
Must also possess an LLM
Candidate must have not less than 18 years post call experience in the legal profession, with at least 5 years in senior management
