News: Enugu State Government has Approved the Recruitment of 1,500 Teachers

Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has approved the recruitment of 1,500 primary school teachers in a bid to enhance basic education in the state.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Amoke, said Ugwuanyi had directed the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board to immediately carry out the recruitment.

The statement explained that the state Commissioner for Education, Prof Uche Eze, had, while addressing journalists after a meeting of the State Executive Council, disclosed that the new teachers would be deployed in rural areas.

The statement also disclosed that Ugwuanyi approved the sum of N252.4m for the Institute of Management and Technology to pursue the re-accreditation of some of the institution’s courses.

In the same vein, the governor also approved the establishment of 12 courts to deal with issues that concern the implementation of the Child Rights Law in the state.

The appointment and inauguration of members of a committee that will drive cases relating to adoption and fostering in the newly approved courts was also approved, according to the statement.

Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Peace Nnaji, who disclosed the development to journalists after the SEC meeting, noted that the state government was determined to curtail cases of child trafficking, illegal adoption and ‘baby factory’ in the state.

Nnaji further disclosed that hospitals in the state would be co-opted into the campaign against child trafficking.

“The adoption committee through the instrument of the government was able to stop the nefarious activities that were going-on at the New Artisan Market, Enugu, where children are being trafficked, sold and engaged in prostitution,” Nnaji said, according to the statement.

The statement also disclosed that the ministries of gender affairs and education would collaborate to organise seminars and workshops “to talk to teenage girls in secondary schools against lesbianism, prostitution, pornography and other vices”.
