Authorities of National Hospital, Abuja, on Saturday  confirmed seven persons among 67,000 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) job applicants in the FCT dead.

The applicants had converged on the National Stadium, Abuja, one of the venues for the test to fill 5,000 vacancies in NIS and many were said to have arrived at the centre before 6a.m.

The service had fixed the test nationwide for the 7,000 applicants for the available jobs.

However, a stampede ensued at the FCT centre about 7a.m. when the screening of candidates was to start for the test scheduled for 4p.m.

Mr Tayo Haastrup, the spokesman for the hospital, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the seven, five women and two men, were brought in dead and that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

“The hospital received some casualties from the stampede from the ongoing Immigration recruitment at the National Stadium. Those that died were seven in number, five women are and two men, their corpses have been deposited at the mortuary, “ Haastrup said.

He said the hospital was stabilising those brought in unconscious from the stampede, while other casualties had been taken to other hospitals, including Asokoro General Hospital.

NAN recalls that in 2008, no fewer than 20 people died in various states of the federation during a similar exercise conducted by the Ministry of Interior for Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Customs Service. (NAN)

It is time for God to send a messiah to nigeria so that all the wicked leaders will die a shameful death.
All these beating, killing and maltreating that happen to nigerians will surely come upon all these wicked people in power and even from the head of NIS to the last position and their family so thatthey will know how painful it is to loose a loved one

God saved me frm destruction dat day. I forgot my acknowledgemnt slip n oda relevant document i used for d registratn at a friend's place. She found it n told me she wud keep it til wen nxt i come. Afta a week i went to get it, but she cudnt find it. We turnd her ause upside down but to no avail. I tried everytin humanly posible to get anoda acknowlegment slip but notin worked. I was at home dat saturday crying my eyes out wen my friends were goin for d exam. Mayb i wud hav been among those dat died, but God prevented me frm going. I THANK GOD. I suport d idea of d protest for our money to be refunded n d bereaved family be compensated. I wud only blame jonathan for delegating his authority to an incompetent minister of interior who see nigerian youths as cattles dat can treated anyhow. May d soul of d dead rest in peace... Amen

We can't be cowed by riff-raffs while aportioning blames to GEJ. It all became Jonathan's achiles' heel since the day he promised nigerians jobs and fresh air. GEJ knows it's his cross a reason why he's speechless. He is the president; as such, he is answerable for whatever happens in the country including the lives of those dead applicants.

Honestly, we don't learn. I can't imagine myself paying money to apply for a job. Worst still,Nigerian federal government job. I see a lot of deception around and the same people who are crying now are most likely to fall victim again. It is irresponsibility for any organization(private or public)to pass on recruitment cost or even dupe people.Yet we all think it is normal.we are only temporarily alarmed due to the death toll. Many will soon pay N200,000 to N300000 to be given the same job. Many of the present applicants are gainfully employed. Ignorance has a huge price and it pays to have our values right.

If we must blame govt for the lack of jobs for our youth in this country is right and the successive govt hasnt done much in this regard with unemploy population soars everyday. We shd stop blaming jonathan for everything, for he wasnt there during the similar exercise in 2008 when scores of applicant died too.i was previlege to be at ilorin center and i what i witness wasnt palatable as these young officer beat and assault applicant at will,no proper planning nor organisation as there wasnt any line-up stages for the exercise and the officers were seen standing in two and three chatting while some stood in their vehichle.what i expected is not met ,a roobust organisation as immigration cannt conduct test peacefully with millions they rake in from application fees of 1000 each.what stopped them from hoisting the test online while everybody can do it at the comfort of their homes or cafe. Or propably pay for unilorin cbt hall.may Allah comfort the family of the departed souls
