General Counsel / Legal Adviser at a Pan-African Group

In order to meet increasing demands for our services, vacancy now exists for the below senior management position in our Head Office located in Lagos, Nigeria:

Job Title: General Counsel / Legal Adviser

Location: Lagos

Responsibilities

• Report directly to the Executive Chairman and advise executives and / or Board of Directors about legal issues related to the Group’s business activities such as government regulations, contracts, property, taxes and labour
• Design, manage and implement the legal framework and governance structure of all subsidiaries within the Group, and provide legal timely and fool proof advisory services on various legal matters involving incorporation, venture, partnership, corporate finance, litigation and labour laws for the Group
• Conduct legal analysis and research; provide counsel on different legal issues, interpret laws, rulings and regulations and advise the Group on best alternatives; and drafting legal opinions, memoranda, service agreements and other briefing documents for the Group in conjunction with external solicitors.
• Communicate and negotiate with external parties such regulators, external solicitors and other key stakeholders to create corporate brand trust for the Group as a socially responsive organization
• Draft and solidify agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights
• Deal with complex matters with multiple stakeholders and forces

General Qualification, Experience, Attributes and Skills Required

• A minimum of LL.B / BL degree with membership of recognized professional bodies within or outside Nigeria. A relevant post-graduate degree is added advantage
• A minimum of 5 year post qualification experience in senior management position as General Counsel / Legal Adviser with proven experience in a business environment of a large company
• Working and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of Corporate Law and procedures, and the legal dynamics of the local and transnational business ecosystem
• Excellent analytical, researching and drafting, report writing, presentation and communication skills
• High degree of professional ethics and integrity as well as strong interpersonal and decision making skills
• An excellent team player with the ability to prioritize work, especially when deadlines need to be met.
