Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) - Established in 1998, Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) an umbrella company of First Sürat Group of Companies Limited, an investment from Turkey is a noble institution of learning with 17 schools across 6 states (Abuja, Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Kano and Yobe) in Nigeria. With staff strength of over 1000 academic and non-academic staff members and 5,000 plus students, NTIC is science oriented and paced with the vision to empower through the provision of broad, appropriate and adequate curricula offerings, using state of the art technology to provide qualitative and functional science to all our present and prospective students irrespective of nationality, religion or tribe.

As a science oriented, full-fledged and government approved secondary school, NTIC places a special emphasis on teaching of science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. We apply the Nigerian education curriculum designed by the NEDRDC, which is compatible with an international oriented curriculum geared towards science. We also groom our students for examinations such as ICDL, SAT, TOEFL Courses, JAMB and WAEC Courses.

The Nigerian Tulip International Colleges is the pioneer organizer of the International Science Olympiad (ISO); an international competition in science subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer and Biology with participating countries drawn from more than 20 countries around the world. In 2016/2017 academic session, NTIC won for Nigeria 48 International Medals from 12 International competitions our students participated in and so far, a total of 218 international medals have been won by NTIC for Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: National Head of Department, English (Primary)

Location: Abuja (FCT)

Job overview

  • National Head of Department, English is part of the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) who is the representative of the English department. The position is charged with the core mandate of providing effective leadership and management and thereby building and maintaining effective teaching which continually enhances the quality of learning and achievement.

Purpose

  • To be accountable for students’ progress and development in the subject area.
  • To develop and enhance the teaching quality of other staff.
  • To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant, and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the department, following the goals of the school, the curricular policies determined by the Head Office and NTIC School Administrators and National Policy on Education.
  • To be accountable for leading, managing, and developing the subject/curriculum area.
  • To advise on teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within the department effectively to support the department development plan.

Responsible for:

  • Teaching staff and other relevant personnel within the Department.

Liaising with:

  • Managing Director, Deputy Managing Director, Principals/Vice Principals, other Heads of Departments, State Heads, Support and Training Unit (STU) and relevant staff with cross-school responsibilities, relevant non-teaching support staff, and parents.

Responsibilities
General Duties:

  • Develops and reviews syllabus, resources, schemes of work, making policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in the department.
  • Provides guidance on the choice of and appropriate use of teaching methods and evaluation of the teaching of the subjects in the school. Takes appropriate action to ensure improvement.
  • Establishes clear procedures and policies for assessing, evaluating, recording, and reporting on students’ achievements.
  • Ensures effective development of students' learning skills takes place.
  • Establishes high expectations and ensures that clear achievement targets are set for students including those with special educational needs.
  • Works with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives, and strategic plans for the department which have coherence and relevance to the needs of pupils and the aims, objectives, and strategic plans of the school.
  • Ensures that teachers fully internalize and demonstrate an understanding and communication of the teaching objectives in lessons.
  • Plays a full and active role in the life of the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) community, to support its distinctive vision, mission, ethics, and policies and to encourage and ensure that staff and students follow this example.
  • Is responsible for student progress and development, and monitor and support students towards raising standards of their achievement.
  • Prepares, guides and oversees the designs of the classes, labs, and cabinets. Encourages school admin staff, teachers, and students to update the school designs, class posters, and students’ works to display.

Teaching, Learning, Curriculum Design and Implementation:

  • Develops schemes of work within the framework of the curriculum and the requirements of the examination boards, working collaboratively with the whole team.
  • Liaises with the principals and vice-principals to ensure the delivery of the standardized scheme of work in the schools and classes.
  • Designs educational materials.
  • Prepares and monitors the general examinations.
  • Ensures that setting, submission, moderation, and marking of internal examinations is correctly done following school formats, requirements, and deadlines.
  • Takes responsibility for mock and external examinations in line with the school’s examinations policy.
  • Teaches a minimum of 10- 12 periods a week, depending on the agreement between the Principal, Vice- Principal, and other relevant administrative staff.
  • Keeps up to date with and responds to national developments in the subject area and teaching practice and methodology.
  • Is accountable for the general monitoring of the work and standards within the department and to provide a periodical written evaluation of its effectiveness.
  • Replicates the good practice expected of all teachers as stipulated in the teacher job description and exhibits high expectations by showing exemplary leadership.
  • Is responsible for securing high standards of teaching and learning as well as playing a major role in the development of NTIC policy and practice.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the department by reviewing students’ performance as well as the performance and management of the teachers within the department.
  • Ensures that there is suitable subject(s) assessment methods for all levels.
  • Involves in the preparation of departmental budgets, monitors use, and keeps a record of resources.

Staff Development:

  • Works with the appropriate Principals, Vice- Principals, or any other relevant staff to ensure that staff development needs are identified and appropriate programs are designed to meet such needs.
  • Promotes and provides as appropriate, induction, in-service-training (INSET), professional development, and training opportunities for the department and individuals.
  • Provides appropriate professional support to teachers in their professional tasks and management of student behavior through formal and informal interaction.
  • Conducts teachers’ assessment tests once a term for the teachers; records, reviews, analyzes, and evaluates the results. Arrange supplementary classes or workshops for the teachers getting low scores.
  • Creates a climate that enables other staff to develop and maintain positive attitudes towards the subjects and teach them.
  • Exhibits enthusiasm and high standards of teaching to members of the department and students.
  • Assists in the development of teachers within the department by actively supporting and mentoring them.
  • Plans preside or coordinate the weekly departmental meetings. Records and evaluates the minutes and reports of these meetings.

Recruitment / Deployment of Staff / Management of Staff:

  • Carries out periodical class visits and lesson observation to members of the department.
  • Participates in the school staff performance reviews and appraisal programs, both as appraiser and appraisee.
  • Consults with the Vice Principals regarding the deployment of staff and arrangement of their timetables.
  • Monitors and evaluates the work of members of the department following the agreed school procedures supported by senior management. Assists the school Principals in the evaluation of the quality of work and job performance in general at the end of the year specifically.
  • Undertakes Teachers’ Reviews and acts as a reviewer for a group of staff within the designated department.
  • Participates in the interview process for teaching posts when required and ensures effective induction of new staff in line with school procedures.
  • Is responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the designated department and acts as a positive role model.
  • Promotes teamwork to motivate staff to ensure effective working relations.

Quality Assurance:
Visits the branches of NTIC in different states at different times to carry out department’s oversight functions in the areas heightened below:

  • evaluation of the teachers’ performances;
  • human capacity development i.e., workshops;
  • writing and preparing evaluations and results for the school administrators and teachers;
  • monitoring of the assigned portfolios i.e., library, documentation, etc.
  • Establishes the process of setting targets within the department and working towards their achievement.
  • Establishes common standards of practice within the department and develops the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles.
  • Contributes to the school procedures for lesson plans, schemes of work, records of work, syllabus coverage, lesson observation, field trips, etc.
  • Seeks / implements modification and improvement where required.
  • Produces an annual examinations analysis and department review as part of the school’s self-evaluation cycle.

Communication and Meetings:

  • Meets departmental staff regularly to plan, model, disseminate good practice, review and implement school and departmental programs to ensure the provision of agendas and minutes or points of action.
  • Maintains strong communication with Principals, Vice Principals, State English HODs, and other English teachers within the department.
  • Ensures that all members of the department are familiar with the departmental aims and objectives.
  • Liaises with class teachers, Vice Principals, State HODs, and other NTIC staff as necessary.
  • Acts as an advisor to the School Administrators.
  • Completes all planning documents, reports, and returns within the deadline.
  • Attends National HOD meetings, departmental meetings, and other meetings as appropriate. Prepares, records, and evaluates the departmental meeting reports and minutes and sends these reports to Deputy Managing Director according to the deadlines.
  • Ensures the two-way transmission to department members of whole school issues and policies, including the forwarding of minutes or other documentation where appropriate.

Management of Resources:

  • Manages the department resources like preparation of materials and books, purchasing these materials, and monitoring how efficiently the materials are used within the limits, guidelines, and procedures laid down.
  • Works with the Principals and Vice Principals to ensure that the department's teaching commitments are effectively and efficiently time-tabled and roomed.

Pastoral System:

  • Guides students on basic values, citizenship, and responsibility. Contributes to pastoral education policy of the school at any level as requested and necessary.
  • Monitors and supports the overall progress and development of pupils within the department.
  • Acts as a Form Tutor and to carry out the duties associated with that role as outlined in the generic job description.
  • Contributes to personal, social, and health-related issues (PSHE), citizenship, enterprise, and other cross-curricular issues according to school policy.

Other Specific Duties:

  • Conducts the activities and events of the department i.e., Departmental Competitions, relevant clubs, subject weeks, Olympiad studies and competitions, national and international competitions, IFLC, etc.;
  • Plays a full part in the life of the school community; supports its distinctive mission, ethics, and policies, and encourages and ensures staff and students follow this example.
  • Continues personal and professional development as necessary or arranged.
  • Prepares, publishes, and updates department related books like entrance exams, etc
  • Evaluate, choose, and recommends the school textbooks and any other supplementary books for the school.
  • Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each task undertaken may not be identified.
  • National HOD English will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from a Principal, Vice- Principal to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description.

Qualifications

  • BA, B.Sc, B.Ed Degree in English, English Education, English Arts, Mass Communication, etc.
  • Added advantage: TRCN, Masters degree, TKT module 1, 2, 3, TEFL, TESOL.
  • At least 7 years of teaching experience and conversant with the British and Nigerian curricula.
