Project Description

• The World Bank-funded Project “Design and Implementation of a strategy for the development of Nigeria’s gemstone and jewellery industry” is attached to the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MinDiver) Project of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD) under the Federal Government of Nigeria.
• The MinDiver Project aims to diversify the Nigerian economy from the oil & gas sector through the development of Nigeria’s vast natural resources in key commodities, amongst them precious and semi-precious gemstones, such as sapphire, ruby, rubellite, tourmaline, emerald, topaz, amethyst, garnet, etc. and to facilitate downstream sector development, enhance competitiveness, stimulate the use of local resources (import substitution).
• One of the project outcomes is the training of a skilled workforce in design and jewellery making, i.e. to form master jewellery makers who will represent the first batch of a new generation of master trainers for Nigeria’s gemstone and jewellery industry. They will be skilled in new techniques and trained in attractive designs in order to thrive and develop the local markets.
• The project is implemented by a Consultant team consisting of two partners: Projekt-Consult GmbH (lead), and the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery (DGJ) Idar-Oberstein, University of Trier, working in cooperation with the Gemological Institute of Nigeria (GIN) as the national counterpart organization.

Job Description

• The short-term Consultant (expert)  will join a team of international experts in jewellery design and manufacturing.
• His/ her task will be to lead the training with specific emphasis on “jewellery and object design” in the scope of the master training course to be held for 2 groups with up to 20 trainees each in Abuja. 
• The expert will contribute to the theoretical and practical training sessions covering four modules:
  • Foundation of jewellery-manufacturing;
  • Manufacturing of jewellery components;
  • Jewellery and object design;
  • Advanced jewellery manufacturing;
  • With a strong focus is on modules 3 and 4.

Qualifications

• Diploma / Certificate in Jewellery and Object Design (corresponding to American Certification for Jewellery Professionals );
• At least ten (10) years of experience as qualified goldsmith/designer/jewellery maker;
• Demonstrated portfolio of hand-made jewellery pieces and design objects;
• Strong skills in jewellery and object design;
• Familiarity with (West) African ethnology, traditional West African goldsmithing techniques and fusion designs ( mixing traditional styles and modern manufacturing methods);
• Proven experience in training, teaching and knowledge & skills/know-how transfer, preferably in the African context;
• Excellent command of English language, written and orally ( indispensable) ;
• Willing to travel on several short-term missions, up to 6 weeks each, in 2022;
• Full COVID-19 immunization will be required before the start of the first mission.
