Chipper Cash is Africa’s modern mobile payments platform. Chipper was founded in 2018 by Ham Serunjogi and Maijid Moujaled, with the aim of “chipping away” at the problem of inaccessible financial services, a high population of underbanked consumers, reliance on cash for daily commerce and the difficulty of cross-border transactions. We’re helping friends, families and loved ones stay connected and securely send money across Africa with incredible ease and peace of mind. Our cross-border payments infrastructure also helps merchants and businesses in Africa accept payments on the internet with no friction. Over 3 million users have joined so far and we’re growing very fast. We have raised a total of $300mm from the likes of Bezos Expeditions, FTX, Silicon Valley Bank, Joe Montana, Ribbit Capital, and others to accelerate the growth of financial services within Africa.
We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern to join us as we continue our amazing growth trajectory. Chipper's Summer Internships gives college students the opportunity to augment their education by taking on meaningful real-world projects over a 3 month span during the summer break from college. Our Interns gain a solid understanding of Chipper, our mission, and what it's like to work at a growth stage company.
Your Mission
You’ll be learning from and working with other Software Engineers on the Money Movement Engineering team.
This team develops and matures the backend engineering systems which handle the flow of money within, onto, and off of the Chipper Cash platform. These systems process billions of dollars and are a crucial part of the Chipper Cash platform and experience for the people that use Chipper Cash to send money around the world.
After being onboarded, you’ll be assigned to work on a small project either with another engineer or with a mentor to help guide and champion your success. You will be part of all regular team meetings and normal functions such as sprint planning and code reviews.
What You'll Be Doing
Design, develop, and maintain Chipper’s money movement systems, integrations, and infrastructure
Analyze technical problems, ideate and document solutions, and champion their adoption
Review technical specifications and code from other engineers, proactively providing guidance and suggestions to improve individuals and systems
Pair and learn with and from other engineers on the team and wider engineering organization
Collaborate and work with a distributed, diverse, and talented group of people across engineering, product, design, operations, growth, and more.
Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that empowers people to grow and succeed.
Help out in other areas as needed, such as with issue resolution, incidents and investigations, engineering wide initiatives, and other high impact work.
What You Should Have
Experience programming in a modern programming language such as JavaScript, Java, C#, or Python
Basic knowledge of relational databases, such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, and the ability to write simple SQL queries with joins between tables
Experience using modern source control, such as Git and Github
Prior backend development or integrating APIs is a plus. Candidates without this experience will be provided on-job training and mentoring
Excellent communication, both written and oral.
Good organization and time management skills.
