Job Title: Inclusive Economies Correspondent - TR Foundation
We are seeking a talented journalist in Nigeria to join our award-winning news team and contribute to our Inclusive Economies pillar.
You are able to cover issues ranging from socio-economic inclusion, sustainable business, ‘Just Transition’, race / gender / sexual orientation-based discrimination and its impact on economies, informal economies, new economic / business models and similarly related topics.
You put people ahead of markets in your journalism.
You are comfortable pivoting from writing an explainer on black markets, to reporting on the impact of war in Ukraine on food prices in West Africa, to how internet shutdowns hurt regional economies.
You have excellent news judgment, are deadline driven and brimming with ideas.
You know how to write for digital audiences, always think of multimedia possibilities for your stories, and come to the table with innovative ideas for your storytelling.
Reporting from the ground in more than 70 countries, our global news team covers the new frontier of human rights. From investigating slavery in supply chains, to the human impact of climate change, to how data-driven technology and AI are impacting people, we report on challenges affecting fundamental human rights and freedoms. About the Role
As our Inclusive Economies Correspondent, you will:
Pitch, research and write deeply reported stories from West Africa covering socio-economic inclusion, fair labour, sustainable business and the impact of economic forces on ordinary people.
Pitch and participate in creating visually rich multimedia stories
Collaborate across our focus areas – Climate, Inclusive Economies and Tech & Society – to produce cross-pollinating stories
Collaborate with social media team to create informative and engaging social posts
Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy
Develop and manage a network of contacts, expert freelancers, photographers and video journalists
To be our Inclusive Economies Correspondent, you will likely have:
At least 5 years of journalism experience
Sound understanding of global geopolitics and macroeconomics
Expertise in reporting economic and social issues and their impact on people, particularly in West Africa
Passion for covering under-reported stories, and for centering people, not markets, in your coverage. We particularly want to hear from communities whose voices rarely feature in international news.
Aptitude for identifying, understanding and explaining data-based stories
Versatile and engaging writing style able to adapt to digital as well as traditional media audiences
Familiarity with multimedia storytelling, including video and audio production and photography
Strong understanding of social media and digital audiences
Ability to meet deadlines
Legal right to work in Nigeria
