News Editor at The Explainer

The Explainer is an online news and public policy analysis platform, designed to innovatively distil and disseminate content grounded in fact and journalistic objectivity. The mission of The Explainer is to directly impact the daily lives of citizens by providing background, context and depth in the analysis of core development and governance issues in Nigeria, Africa and the world. The Explainer is out to inform citizens, and shape public policy and governance outcomes to promote effective service delivery and good governance.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Description

• The platform anchors its content strategy on the rigour of balanced, investigative, and citizens-centered journalism, which aims to enhance the knowledge of the public on the most important political, economic, cultural and other governance issues of the day.
• To operationalise its strategy, The Explainer is seeking to recruit a passionate, committed and results-driven News Editor.

Roles And Responsibilities

• Lead the generation of ideas for exclusive copies across governance issues
• Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors in news and features copies
• Verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics
• Check text for style, readability, and adherence to editorial policies
• Arrange page layouts of photos, videos, articles, and advertisements on The Explainer website
• Rewrite statements, report summaries, editorial, reviews and other content for publication
• Supervise publication and dissemination of edited news and features copies in line with editorial policies and plans
• Contact sources for verification of the accuracy of news content
• Ensure libelous or slanderous material in all Explainer Editorial content are tracked, spotted and removed.

Qualifications

• First Degree in Mass Communications in Mass Communications, History, International Relations or other related Humanities or Social Science disciplines will be required.

Skills And Competencies:

• Ability to speedily and accurately edit news and features copies in line with The Explainer House style and editorial policies  
• Compelling prose writing and presentation skills
• Capacity to generate news and feature story ideas with multi-media elements, including text, video, still pictures and audio formats.
• Adept at building key relationships with stakeholders and sources for exclusive news and features stories
• Possesses the passion to generate news leads on issues of human rights, democracy and good governance.
• Ability to analyse and contextualise policy issues and find exclusive news angles
• Capacity to network and co-create content with other news outlets within the ecosystem.
• Must be a self-starter with the capacity to work independently under tight deadlines to deliver copies.
