University Librarian at the Obafemi Awolowo University

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, is a first generation comprehensive public institution established in 1961 as The University of life, by the then Western Region of Nigeria. In August 1975, the Federal Government of Nigeria took over the University and in 1987 renamed after Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a frontline Nigerian Statesman and one of the University's founding fathers. The University is situated on a vast expanse of land of 11,861 hectares in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Southwest of Nigeria. The Vision of the founders of the University was to establish an institution dedicated to the promotion of learning and culture.

The Post of the Librarian of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Nigeria, will be vacant by 13th of July, 2023. In accordance with the provisions of the Obafemi Awolowo University Law, as amended, the Council of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife wishes to invite suitably qualified candidates for the position below:

Job Title: University Librarian

Location: Ile-Ife, Osun

Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library

  • Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, the Central Library of Obafemi Awolowo University established in 1962, is the major repository of all academic resources (books, journals, theses, government documents etc.) which serve the needs of both staff and students of the University as well as other interested were in the Community. The Library holds over 700,000 volumes of books, several journals and print materials. It also has two Electronic Libraries units providing electronic services.
  • The Library is subscribed to scholarly Databases which provide access to learning and research resources that are available globally for the use of staff and students of the University. Library facilities can be accessed through https://www.library.oquife.edu.ng. The University has a Central Library, Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, a medical Library, the Law Library and 12 Faculties Libraries in addition to Libraries located in the institutes and centres.
  • There is an OAU Publications unit has amassed documents that emanated from the University and a budding International Repository Lab (ir.osuife.edu.ng) that archives the University intellectual property.
  • As a hybrid Library, Hezekiah Oluwasanmi has launched into the Digital realm of the Library services.
  • The Library has access to the Telepresence cloud computing facilities available at the University's ICT Centre.

The Job

  • The University Librarian is a Principal Officer and responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day administration of the University Library and the co-ordination of Library services in the University.
  • He/she will be required to administer the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library System and to develop it to meet the University's increasing needs especially its post- graduate and research programmes.
  • The appointment shall be for a single term of five (5) years on such terms and conditions as the Council of the University shall stipulate. The appointment is further governed by the Federal Government Establishment circulars as may be adopted by the Council from time to time.

Qualifications and Experience

  • The candidate should possess at least a minimum of Higher Degree of Master's in Library and Information Science with fifteen (15) years of cognate experience.
  • Possession of a Doctorate Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Candidates are also required to have scholarly publications in reputable journals and must be members of the following:
    • Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria
    • Nigerian Library Association.

In addition, he/she:

  • Must not be less than 50 years nor older than of 65 years by 12th, July, 2023;
  • Must be a person of impeccable integrity and strong moral character with ability to relate excellently with staff, students and the general public.
  • Must be a person with an articulate vision for the development of the University and the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library in particular, combined with a strong passion to implement the vision.
  • Must be up-to-date in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills
  • Must be of good physical and mental health, with pleasant disposition
  • Must be a person of strong character, sound leadership skills and ability to instill confidence and engender trust in his/her members of staff
  • Must be devoid of any criminal record; and must be totally free from financial embarrassment.

The Candidate:

  • Must be visionary, have the ability to provide good leadership and command respect and loyalty of staff of the University.
  • Candidates must also possess personal integrity and demonstrate transparency in private and public life.

Conditions of Service

  • The appointment is for a single tenure of five (5) years, while Salary and other conditions of service shall be as approved for Librarians of Federal Universities by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
