OppApp is a new early-stage Educational technology (EdTech) and Service Provider startup based on an ambitious & exciting, yet realistic product vision. Africa is the world's youngest continent and expanding the fastest. The number of young people working in Africa will rise to 375 million by 2030. The International Monetary Fund estimates that by 2035, there will be more young Africans joining the workforce each year than there are in the rest of the world put together due to population growth on the continent. The number of young individuals looking for work is much higher than the number of opportunities that are open to them. The skills of young people entering the workforce and the needs of companies are also out of sync.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Chief People Officer (Sweat Equity)

Location: Lekki Phase 1, Lagos (Remote)
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Description

  • The individuals who will be hired for this position will be given a significant amount of equity given that the company is at ideation stage.
  • The person is fully remote.
  • The company is in its pre-seed with interest from few VCs once an MVP is made and possible grants from NEAR protocol.
  • We are at a critical stage in our growth and have an urgent need for a Chief People Officer. Ideally, we want someone with previous startup experience who has experience in all phases of the design process.
  • We are looking for someone to join our Executive Team as our Chief People Officer reporting to our CEO, who is passionate about helping organizations win and bringing out the best in people.
  • As Chief People Officer, you will advise, coach, and partner with the CEO and Executive Team of OppApp to help enable the performance of our teams and our people. We boast a strong company culture built around candor and a commitment to performance, balanced with a strong sense of interpersonal connection and caring. The ideal leader will work in partnership with leadership as the architect and overseer of all people operations.

About the Job

  • Advise and support the CEO and Executive Team in issues related to team management, organizational effectiveness, and overall individual performance
  • Serve as a trusted advisor who works across teams to advance high-priority, company-wide initiatives
  • Actively lead recruitment strategy and efforts for roles at all levels of the organization
  • Introduce and drive improvements to both performance management and company culture
  • Lead overall internal communication strategy including written communications and ongoing Town Hall meetings to ensure team members are properly informed and aligned with company goals and strategy
  • Manage the overall strategy around benefits administration to ensure our total rewards package is competitive

Role & Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the CEO, the Chief People Officer (CPO) will lead the company’s People strategy and will be a strategic partner and influential contributor to the executive team.
  • This executive will oversee the overall strategic direction of the people teams and tie this into the company’s broader business goals. The CPO will also be a steward of the company’s culture, mission, and values.

  • Can deliver a master class on interpersonal relationships
  • Can work effectively with a diverse employee group, ranging from customer service employees to software developers
  • Believes that near-term organizational change happens through subtle, consistent, intentional changes
  • Knows that team performance and culture are inextricably linked
  • Is passionate about developing and executing large-scale change initiatives in a patient, gradual manner
  • Is hands-on and cares about the details

About You

  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in an HR leadership role, preferably in an entrepreneurial self-starting founder led environment
  • You have a strong business acumen and recognize the need to balance the needs of the business with the needs of the people.
  • You have experience coaching and advising management at all levels.
  • You have strong recruitment experience and understand what it takes to attract and retain top talent.
  • You have experience working with engineering talent, both from a recruitment and an engagement standpoint
  • Act as a key advisor to the CEO and act as a critical contributor on the executive team.
  • Provide thoughtful and strategic counsel on matters involving people, talent, and culture.
  • Partner with company leadership to scale a world-class culture and successfully implement strategic and innovative People and Talent solutions supporting business growth.
  • Develop and lead the planning, design, and implementation of the company’s People initiatives to support current and future business needs across the organization. Drive all aspects of human resources including recruiting, performance management, engagement, learning & development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Provide leadership to the People team by building, motivating and retaining a high-performing, results-oriented and respected People organization. Build and lead an operationally strong organization with scalable systems, processes and analytics to reinforce leadership principles.
  • The CPO will measure and constantly improve the people's experience, creating an analytical, data-based approach to how the People function engages the business, problem solves and collaborates.
  • Champion operational excellence, establishing metrics, process, and controls for hiring and performance management, and regular assessment and improvement.
  • Develop and implement talent management strategies, approaches and processes aligned to business needs and objectives to effectively manage short-term and long-term talent gaps and leadership needs.
  • Partner with HR leaders and key stakeholders to design, develop and implement innovative and high impact talent management programs that strengthen leadership talent, foster employee engagement, and enable business success.
  • Facilitate, integrate, and coordinate talent management initiatives, including project planning, resourcing, timing, and communications.
  • Own the talent management governance processes for learning and development and performance management, including measurement and reporting.
  • Create talent assessment approaches that can be applied by organizational leaders in support of effective succession and career planning across the organization.
  • Identify learning and development needs to determine training and development objectives and priorities for the organization.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and direction to a team of 3-5 resources, ensuring timely and effective delivery of talent and learning outcomes.
  • Partner with HR Business Partners (HRBPs), Total Rewards, and Analytics teams to understand the effectiveness of talent programs, and revise strategy & programs as needed
  • Influence leaders across the organization to adopt and promote the talent management framework and practices.
  • Interpret and share new, emerging, and innovative talent management trends, best practices, and insights with leadership for consideration.
  • Adhere to ethical standards & comply with the laws and regulations applicable to the job function
  • Talent assessment approaches are applied by organizational leaders resulting in effective succession and career planning across the organization.
  • Evidence that the right people are in the right roles at the right time.

  • Proven success leading People strategy at a high growth, entrepreneurial, and fast-paced technology company.
  • Depth as a business partner, who can work closely with an Executive Team to identify opportunities and craft and implement solutions relevant to their teams and organizations.
  • Strong general business acumen with the ability to develop and utilize People data and metrics as they relate to and impact business topics.
  • Track record of developing innovative and forward-thinking talent strategies and initiatives, and successfully scaling a compelling company culture.
  • Demonstrated capability in adapting and innovating People practices and solutions and right-sizing them to the needs of a fluid and fast-paced organization.
  • Experience working and adapting in a fast-paced and innovative environment that requires first principles thinking and business aptitude for successful execution.
