Project Background
The DMPA-SC Donor Consortium has made significant contributions to scale up access to DMPA-SC as part of a wider family planning method mix. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has been a key convening partner of the DMPA-SC Donor Consortium, working alongside other donor partners to provide strategic input and direction related to building and maintaining a healthy market for DMPA-SC.
John Snow, Inc. (JSI) will work alongside BMGF to fill urgent gaps at the global and country level through a stop gap approach to address the following objective: Explore key gaps in global DMPA-SC programming and research to inform future investments in DMPA-SC, other new contraceptive methods, and self-care more widely.
To meet this objective, the research team (consisting of US-based M&E advisors, In-country lead (Nigeria), and two qualitative program officers) will conduct a desk review and key informant interviews across four countries (Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, and Zambia) with the purpose of:
Documenting the impact of DMPA-SC dispensing and self-injection initiation protocols in the four countries;
Synthesizing characteristics of DMPA-SC users and self-injectors.
Context
The Qualitative Program Officer will be a highly motivated individual and will work with the JSI team to provide support to the Global DMPA-SC Gaps Assessment work.
He/she will work in close collaboration with and provide technical support to the in-country lead in Nigeria and a US-based team of M&E advisors.
The Qualitative Program Officer will report to the In-Country Lead. He/she will work closely with US-based workstream leads to coordinate and execute primary and secondary qualitative data collection and analysis.
Key Activities
Research planning:
Work with a US-based M&E team to refine research questions and methodology
Contribute to IRB submission and management (possibly managing country-specific IRB submissions)
Contribute to the development and/or review of qualitative tools
Research execution:
Lead data collection and analysis as part of the desk/literature review
Manage data teams/in-country data collection consultants (in the four countries) and support coordination of field activities
Where necessary, carry out key informant interviews
Work with the research team to analyze and summarize interview findings, including drafting qualitative themes for coding and analysis
Data management:
Develop and utilize a system to manage data collected in the project
Documenting and sharing lessons:
Support development of briefs, presentations, and manuscripts to document
Support ad hoc priority needs as defined by the team
Skills and Experience
Working knowledge of the country-level family planning environment, partners, and programs, especially relevant Ministry of Health and other government agencies and officials responsible for family planning activities and strategies.
Strong experience planning for, collecting and analysing primary, qualitative data including key informant interviews and focus group discussions
Strong skills in data management and maintaining data quality
Experience carrying out literature reviews and summarizing findings
Strong writing comprehension skills, including writing formal briefs, reports, and manuscripts
Experience engaging with IRB in Nigeria and abroad preferred
Basic understanding of the range of public and private delivery channels for contraceptive options
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Proven ability to prioritize and anticipate and meet deadlines
Proficiency in the MS Office package, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint and/or Google Drive including Google Docs and Google Sheets
Proficiency in English
Beginner or intermediate French a plus
Proven ability to work independently as well as in a team-based environment
