Damnaish Human Capacity Building Initiative (DHCBI) is a Humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization, founded in 2014 and incorporated with the Nigerian Government (Corporate Affairs Commission) in 2015 (CAC/IT/No 83231) to provide humanitarian assistance, in terms of emergency and Capacity building, social development and empowerment to eradication poverty and the fear of want. It has since its inception, been strategizing, collaborating, and interfacing with relevant stakeholders toward enhancing the individual’s ability to break free from poverty or bounce back in times of crisis.

Our society has over the years been bedeviled by insecurity, poverty, illiteracy, disease, hunger, malnutrition, lack of access to clean, water bad sanitation, human rights abuses environmental degradation as well a lack of economic opportunities, making it possible for the humanitarian crisis to thrive. DHCBI, therefore, has tailored its humanitarian services to building or restoring the capacity of individuals and communities towards rapid and quick recovery by supporting livelihoods and sustainable basic services through some articulated programs.

We are recruiting a qualified personnel to fill the position below:

Job Title: Nutrition Officer

Location: Damboa / Askira Uba - Borno

General Description and Job Brief

  • Under the direct supervision of the FSL Manager, the Nutrition Officer upholds the responsibility of ensuring that the community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) activities are functioning properly, providing care of quality to all the beneficiaries, as well as respecting protocols and principles of good practice.

Responsibilities

  • The Nutrition Officer is responsible for the implementation of all nutrition activities in the Local Government Area.
  • Provide proper nutrition screening and emergency nutrition support services including referrals (OTP, TSFP and linking cases for SC) based on Standard Operation Procedures.
  • Responsible for distribution and monitoring of food and specialized nutritious food, conducting monthly screenings of children (6-23 months) and PLW, and providing key messages on the adequate use of specialized nutritious food practices to all caregivers.
  • The Nutrition Officer will work closely with the project team and other stakeholders to ensure that the project activities are in line with the overall project objectives, and will play a key role in ensuring that the nutrition needs of the target population are met.
  • Conduct monthly screenings of children (6-23 months) and PLW.
  • Promote income-generating opportunities for households through VSLA, and promote household nutrition through vegetable gardens.
  • Collaborate with WFP, UNICEF, the food security sector, nutrition partners and other stakeholders to ensure that beneficiaries receive appropriate support and services.
  • Implement gender-sensitive and protection-focused programming, ensuring the safety and protection of all beneficiaries.
  • Provide capacity building and training to local partners and stakeholders on the provision of nutrition services, support for nutrition-sensitive programming, and the development of nutrition education and promotion activities.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and other partners.
  • Represent the project in relevant nutrition-related meetings and forums, and contribute
  • Conduct community engagement and sensitization activities, promoting healthy diets and nutrition knowledge and practices.
  • Ensure that project resources are used efficiently, effectively and transparently.
  • Conduct a demonstration of nutrition product preparation for new mothers to ensure appropriate utilization.
  • Assist the community Nutrition workers in implementing nutrition activities to develop monthly work plans.

Coordination:

  • Develop lines of communication and close collaboration with WFP, team members and other stakeholders to contribute to a coordinated humanitarian response.
  • Liaise with the Logistics and Procurement Department to ensure that the resources required for the Nutrition activities are acquired timely. Complete and keep records of the necessary paperwork
  • Represent DHCBI at external stakeholder meetings in coordination with FSL Manager.
  • Coordinate field activities with other DHCBI teams.
  • Participate in regular internal and external Livelihood coordination meetings for the program at Camp, Host Community, LGA and state levels as necessary.
  • Ensure maximum visibility of the organization amongst the Government of Nigeria, and the NGO/UN community.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with all field staff and service departments.

Reporting:

  • Produce Nutrition updates including in-field visit reports.
  • Contribute to program weekly/monthly reports including plans and facilitation of community awareness sessions on basic Livelihood activities and their management.
  • Support and coordinate with the M&E Officers for surveys and other program monitoring activities.
  • Support program teams to ensure M&E aspects of the Nutrition activities and learning experiences are captured.

Miscellaneous:

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the FSL Manager.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse:

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within DHCBI and amongst beneficiaries.

Compliance & Ethics:

  • Promote and encourage a culture of compliance and ethics throughout DHCBI. As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of WFP and DHCBI and donor compliance and ethics standards as well as adhering to those standards. Conduct work with the highest level of integrity.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Food Nutrition, Community Health, or Nursing from a recognized University - Master's degree is an asset.
  • Experience in nutrition work and implementation of CMAM programming, including monitoring and evaluation skills, with NGOs.
  • Experience of and commitment to utilizing participatory approaches.
  • Experience in nutrition assessments and understanding of nutritional surveillance and information systems.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach local staff and community workers.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathize with all beneficiaries.
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions.
  • Capacity and willingness to base at DHCBI field locations.
  • Strong report-writing skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and local languages.
  • Very good interpersonal skills, particularly in networking, and working with communities, local civil society and local authorities.
  • Good understanding and knowledge in the application of do-no-harm, conflict sensitivity principles and DHCBI standards and ethics for protection work.
  • Good understanding of protection concerns, including GBV issues in displacement, human rights, and international humanitarian law.
  • Experience in working in northeastern Nigeria, preferably Borno State.
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles and action, and to DHCBI’s mission, values and policies
  • Excellent computer knowledge and skills in using Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for beneficiaries.
  • Knowledge and experience with community outreach and mobilization.
  • Positive and professional attitude, including the ability to lead and work well in a team setting.
  • Strong ability to organize work, meet deadlines, coordinate multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Orderly presentation of work.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
