Smiling Hearts Initiatives International (SHI) is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization founded in Nigeria and has been operational since 2016 as Zumunchi Hearts Initiative International before its official registration with the CAC on the 10th October 2018 as Smiling Hearts Initiative International (SHI Int.). SHI Int. is committed to immediate humanitarian relief and support to those in urgent need and also protects dignity of persons affected by natural deserter, violence crime or any other emergency. Independent, private and nonprofit, Nigerian base NGO SHI Int’l (operating under the Nigerian law) respects a strict political and religious impartiality, and operates following principles of non-discrimination, transparency, according to its core values: Compassion, Equality, Diversity, Integrity, Team Work and Responsiveness

SHI Int’l teams are devoted to supporting vulnerable communities throughout the world and accompanying them in building a better future by providing a response adapted to specific needs. We provide aid to populations affected by crisis using an approach that is local and global, multidisciplinary and adapted to each context. By ensuring the link between Emergency, Rehabilitation and Development. SHI Int’l teams guaranty that interventions made in a situation of crisis are useful and sustainable, because only long term support - by remaining in the area post emergency and involving communities - can end the poverty cycle and accompany populations on the road to better society and enhancing good development strongly focusing in the sectors of Education, Protection,WASH, CCCM, Livelihood, Health, Shelter, Psycho-social support, NFI, Food security/GFD, Community Development in the area of operations.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Livelihood / IGA Assistant

Locations: Maiduguri - Borno, Yobe and Adamawa
Employment Type: Contract

Key Areas of Accountability
Programme Support (Typically will be at field level):

  • Assist program officers to ensure program progress according to the developed schedule and work plan.
  • Assist in the coordination of livelihood activities.
  • Support in the process of beneficiary registration, community mobilization and sensitization.
  • Assist in promoting community participation and inclusion as to encourage community ownership over activities implemented.
  • Ensure equal representation of various community groups in the implementation of activities.
  • Assist in the facilitation of community meetings, focus group discussion and other as required by the program.
  • Keep program officers and management updated regards to security situation in the project implementation area.
  • Provide weekly field reports, capturing activities progress, lessons learned as well as general situation and community updates and needs.
  • Document lessons learned and success stories on the project.
  • Adhere to all SHI policies and procedures as outlined in SHI policies and procedure manuals.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to SHI and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in Communities of operation.
  • To ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the Humanitarian Principles.

Capacity Building:

  • Identify learning and training opportunities for partner staff and communicate this to the Livelihoods Officer or Livelihoods Coordinator.

Representation & Advocacy & Organizational Learning:

  • Supporting coordination working groups within the IDP camps and host communities or target project sites.
  • Contribute to communications and media work as required through correction of data and information and sharing with the project heads

General:

  • Comply with Smiling Hearts Initiatives Int. policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities, and other relevant policies and procedures

Qualifications and Experience
Essential:

  • Education to B.Agriculture or any other related subject or equivalent field experience (in agricultural research programme) and livelihood programming.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience.
  • Previous experience of project management and implementation
  • Relevant experience of working in livelihoods, including report writing.
  • Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability
  • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience of training and capacity building of staff
  • Some experience of representation and ability to represent SHI effectively in external forums.
  • Knowledge of institutional donors and experience of developing proposals
  • Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports
  • Excellent communication and strong influencing skills
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • A high level of written and spoken English
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of SHI. In particular, a good understanding of SHI mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support

Desirable:

  • High level of communication in a local language (Kanuri, Fulani, Hausa, Shuwa-Arab) according to the environment.
  • Familiarity with the integration of program FSL / Nutrition / Wash
  • Experience in gender mainstreaming, social protection programming.
