The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German Agency for International Cooperation) is an international enterprise owned by the German Federal government, operating in many fields across more than 130 countries.

In Nigeria, GIZ's portfolio includes among others, a programme to support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its regional integration goals. The programme aims to strengthen sector-specific capacities in the areas of Peace and Security, Customs and Trade as weir as Strategic Management and Organizational Development in the ECOWAS Commission.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

  • The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn. Our approximately 23,500 employees, almost 70 percent of whom are national personnel, work in a round 120 countries (July 2020) GIZ has worked in Nigeria since 1974.
  • From 2004, GIZ has maintained a country office in the capital city Abuja. Currently 361 national and 66 international employees, 19 regional staff, 4 integrated specialists and 3 development workers are working in the country (June 2020).

The Project

  • Market Oriented Value Chains for Job and Growth in ECOWAS – MOVE programme With global and regional demand constantly rising, the cashew and rice production and processing offer important potential for training, employment, and wealth creation in the ECOWAS region.
  • This can be achieved through private sector development, economic empowerment of women and youth and supporting the efforts at minimizing the impact of climate change.
  • On behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is implementing the Market Oriented Value Chains for Job and Growth in ECOWAS – MOVE programme.
  • The aim of the project is to promote market-oriented and future-proof value chains that contribute to income and employment generation in the ECOWAS region. With the merger of the Competitive Cashew Initiative (ComCashew), and Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI), the focus will be put on the cashew and rice value chains.
  • We aim to ensure long-term, sustainable results and competitiveness in West African region. MOVE project has kicked off in Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
  • The overarching strategy of implementation is built on making value chains more resilient, collaborating with large companies and SMEs, integrating Gender Transformative Approaches (GTA), developing a more conducive local/regional business climate, and then scaling for achieving broad impact in ECOWAS.
  • We want to support inclusive development through the following activities:
    • Increasing the level of value creation within West Africa through strengthened private sector engagement.
    • Improving the economic and environmental sustainability of agricultural systems using good agricultural production (GAP) for sustainable production in a climate-resilient, resource-conserving agriculture and carbon sequestration.
    • Increasing local consumption of rice and cashew products through marketing initiatives and by-products.
    • Youth and gender inclusion: Developing and sharing good examples of inclusive business models and human capacity building by integrating gender responsive and gender transformative approaches (GTA) and information technology (IT) knowledge.
    • Policy advice: Consolidating public-private cooperation in policymaking to reduce regional trade barriers and to support social transformation in the ECOWAS region, like ECOWAS Rice Observatory (ERO), the Consultative International Cashew Council (CICC), African Cashew Alliance (ACA)

Responsibilities & Tasks
Responsibilities:
The Security Guard is responsible for:

  • Guarding, patrolling, or monitoring the premises to prevent theft, violence, or infractions of rules.

Tasks:
Office Services - The Security Guard:

  • Patrol the premises, conduct safety inspections and perform checks on windows, doors, gates, fence and fence security wires and other areas that trespassers may use to gain illegal access, prevent and detect signs of intrusion.
  • General access control and inform staff about visitors by telephone and guide visitors to respective staff offices.
  • Ensure that those who should not be granted access into the premises are professionally and politely prevented from gaining access or escorted from the premises.
  • Write reports of daily activities (daily handing and taking over notes or any other reports) keep daily register of visitors (names address and telephone numbers) in a legible manner for reference.
  • Warn persons of rule infractions or violations and apprehend or evict violators from premises, using force if necessary and with the consent of management, contact the law enforcement agents.
  • Inspect and adjust security systems if any, operate detecting devices if any, screen visitors and prevent passage of prohibited articles in and out of the premises.
  • Protect persons and property on the premises, including employees and visitors, general office equipment, project vehicles and staff vehicles and report any threat to the safety of same to the management promptly.
  • Answer alarms and investigate disturbances, detect crime or detect crimes in action and implement contingency plans, including the evacuation of building. If necessary, with the consent of the management, call the police or Fire department in cases of emergency.
  • Detailed regulation on access to cars into the premises will be handed to the security guard separately
  • Support Office Administration - The Security Guard:
  • Open on daily basis the main entrance to the office and or any other entrance in the morning for the cleaners and close all opened doors at the close of work.
  • Check water level on the ground tanks and pump water to the overhead tank on daily basis and report damage to water supply or pumping machine promptly.
  • Check fluid level of generator supplies, switch on and off the generator as soon as power is cut and restored respectively.
  • Daily record of generator usage
  • Calculation and check of Diesel consumption of generator (Refill and fill generator)
  • Ensures record of Monthly supplies of diesel for the MOVE Programme
  • Documentation of report for generator check, service and repairs
  • Collect on behalf of the office all mail and or courier and hand them over to the reception as soon as possible.
  • Ensure all security lightings within the office are functional and report non-functional lighting points promptly for replacement to the office manager.
  • Ensure that all climbing equipment (e.g. ladder) is always securely locked when not in use.
  • Check regularly if there is any dangerous item lying around or situation on the premises and next to the entrance or other situations posing a health threat. Inform the persons responsible for the same to take it off.
  • Prevent people especially children approaching such dangerous area. If the issue cannot be solved inform the management rapidly.

Other Duties / Additional Tasks - The Security Guards:

  • Assist in making photocopies and scans documents as needed
  • Support in loading and offloading of items delivered into the office.
  • Carries out minor repairs as required keeping office equipment operational
  • Support the waste disposal service in evacuating all solid waste within the office. ▪ Checks office supplies, invoices for goods, delivery note and record any complaints
  • Check deliveries – assures quality and materially correctness of deliveries
  • Accept goods and ensures that the receipt is documented, and goods received are checked appropriately
  • Support in stock management of training materials and office supplies.
  • Coordinate in an emergency situation the contact to security forces and/or doctor(hospital) to assure quick action of the same
  • Any other duties/ instructions given in furtherance of MOVE operations as assigned by the management.

Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience
Formal Education:

  • Minimum of Secondary School Education.

Professional Experience:

  • 1-3 years’ professional experience in a comparable position

Desired Additional Qualifications, Competencies and Experiences:

  • A good knowledge of first aid.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must be smart, intelligent, and energetic, sit or stand for extended period and able to lift up to 50 lbs and do regularly exercises
  • Have a good understanding and practice of vigilance
  • Must be able to remain calm in situations like high tension between him/her and another person
  • Must be polite and courteous to both staff and visitors.
  • Willingness to undertake a flexible shift pattern to include night shifts (except for female guards) in accordance with the security duty roaster.
  • Reliability and good organisational skills, appropriate clean clothing or uniformed appearance.
