Job Title: Chief Officer

Location: Nigeria

Job Description   

• Reporting directly to the Master, the Chief Officer is responsible for the supervision of staff and the safe and efficient operating of the Deck Department.
• The Chief Officer monitors the performance of the Deck Crew for efficiency, conduct and deportment while working within the guidelines of the Collective Agreement and company General Safety Rules.

Highlights and Responsibilities

• Actively promote safe working and safe operational practice which will ensure that personnel operate in safe working environments.
• Arrange safety training on board and remain responsible for use and safe custody of safety training videos.
• Be fully familiar with the vessel firefighting and lifesaving appliances
• Act in accordance with all drill scenarios
• Take part in emergency drill debriefings
• Be aware of, and ensure completion of all documentation for this position
• Understand the Safety Management System (SMS) under ISM
• Be aware of all aspects of the ship’s operation, so that he/she is able, if required, to assume command immediately
• Head over the deck department (supervising Bosun, Carpenter and deckhands)
• Maintain vessel’s maintenance system
• Responsible as a supervisor for loading/unloading operation
• Maintain daily time sheets for deck department
• Supervise Carpenter with fresh water sampling/filling
• Complete and understand ship’s stability report prior to departure
• Open and close ramps and hull openings when in port
• Ensure machinery, hand and rental tools are being used as per manufactures instructions
• Supervise mooring operations and have full understanding of mooring ropes and associated hazards
• Being aware and familiar with all the publications in the Safety Management System (SMS)
• Have full familiarity with the International Collision Regulations
• Have full familiarity of the fire control panel, hull opening & water tight door panel and other indicator panels
• Awareness of the bridge alarm panels.

Job Requirements

• Chief Officer Certificate
• General Radio Officer certificate GOC/GMDSS
• Unlimited DP Certificate
• IMO certificate of Barge Supervisor
• Ship Security Officer certificate as per STCW Regulation VI/5
• In compliance to the flag State competence requirements
• Fluent written / oral English language.
• Have Jackup / Life Boat Experience.
