  • The Social Studies Teacher will design and deliver engaging lessons, foster a multicultural understanding, and empower students to contribute positively to society.

Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Delivery:

  • Develop a comprehensive and culturally relevant Nigerian Social Studies curriculum that aligns with national standards and the school’s educational goals. The curriculum should move from local (Lagos), to national (Nigeria), to regional (West Africa).
  • Design and deliver engaging lessons that promote an understanding of Nigerian history, culture, geography, government, and socio-economic development.
  • Incorporate a variety of teaching strategies, resources, and activities to cater to diverse learning styles and engage students in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Create opportunities for students to explore and celebrate Nigeria’s cultural heritage through interactive projects, presentations, and cultural events.
  • Foster an inclusive and respectful classroom environment that values and respects diverse perspectives and experiences.

Civic Education and Citizenship:

  • Teach students about the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of Nigerian citizenship, emphasizing the importance of active participation in community and national affairs.
  • Facilitate discussions on social justice, human rights, and environmental sustainability, encouraging students to develop empathy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Organize community service projects and initiatives that allow students to make positive contributions to their local communities.

Current Affairs and Global Connections:

  • Stay informed about current events and contemporary issues in Nigeria and the world, integrating relevant topics into lessons to enhance students’ global awareness.
  • Encourage students to analyse and discuss local, national, and international issues from a social studies perspective, promoting informed and responsible citizenship.
  • Foster the development of media literacy skills, enabling students to critically evaluate sources of information and understand different perspectives.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

  • Assess and evaluate students’ understanding and progress through a variety of formative and summative assessment methods, including projects, presentations, quizzes, and discussions.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students, guiding them in setting goals for improvement and encouraging self-reflection.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ academic performance, attendance, and overall progress.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a cohesive and interdisciplinary approach to education, integrating social studies concepts into other subject areas.
  • Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and conferences to stay updated on current pedagogical approaches, research, and best practices in social studies education.
  • Engage in continuous self-reflection and seek opportunities for personal and professional growth.
