Overview
An Information System Auditor (also known as IS/IT Auditor) is responsible for providing independent assurance to stakeholders (i.e. executive management, board of directors, customers, shareholders and investors) on the effectiveness and adequacy of system, process and operational controls around an organization's information systems and IT infrastructure.
An information systems auditor typically performs IT assurance function and is primarily responsible for the identification and assessment of risk/vulnerabilities inherent in IT infrastructures and technology enabled processes within an organization while recommending controls/measures that will mitigate identified risk.
He/she provides that independent assurance to the senior management and the Board of Directors that investments made in technology is enabling the business, creating the expected value to stakeholders of an organization and achieving business objectives. An information systems auditor in the course of his duties also helps stakeholders (i.e. senior management and the Board of Directors) in identifying some of the business pain points occasioned by the use of technology to provide services to customers and improve business efficiency, which management may not be aware of or have failed to address.
An information systems auditor is a risk specialist and should be knowledgeable in risk management and control activities. He/she is expected to have requisite technical skills to be able to perform security assessment of IT systems and infrastructures.
Duties / Responsibilities
The effectiveness of policy, standards, and procedures
The performance of computer information systems and software
The effectiveness of security and control systems, which protect the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of information and systems
Compliance with external regulating bodies and related regulations
Development of new business and information systems
Problems with applications and recommended modifications
Systems testing with internal and external clients and required support during various phases of testing procedures
Evaluate the authorization, accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of transaction processing and controls in business systems
Review application systems and business procedures to determine if they are achieving business objectives
Review the use of computing facilities and controls
Help in other financial and operational audits and projects
Design and build custom forms and reports for various business areas
Review requirements with users and provide time estimates for task completion
Systems auditors spend a lot of time consulting with people and authoring reports. Their reports must be clear and logical.
Education and Training
Degree in Finance, Accounting or Computer Science or any related course
Recognized Information system audit certifications (e.g. CISA)
Technical competence certification is an advantage (eg, Oracle database, Cisco Networking, Microsoft system engineer, CISSP, ITIL, CISM, CGEIT)
Understanding of multiple technology domains including software development, Windows, database management, networking, and UNIX.
Understanding of information security standards, best practices for securing computer systems, and applicable laws and regulations
Competencies (Knowledge & Skills):
Knowledge of Bank’s policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
Knowledge of security testing experience.
Knowledge of various operating system platforms
Risk assessment ability
Internal audit experience
Good Communication (oral & written)
Good Organization skills
Good Interpersonal skills
Knowledge of data processing
Good presentation skill
Good report writing skill
