The Policy Innovation Centre (PIC) is the first national institutionalised behavioural initiative in Africa supporting government and stakeholders to make behaviourally informed decisions and generate evidence for impact driven interventions in critical thematic areas (Governance, Health, Gender & Social Inclusion, Education, Digital & Financial Inclusion). The PIC is positioned to support the delivery of better policies and innovative solutions for high impact interventions across Africa. The PIC is an initiative of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), a leading think tank in Africa redefining evidence based policy advocacy.
The Policy Innovation Centre is serving as the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) Secretariat in Nigeria. NPAP is an initiative of the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), the global platform for translating plastic pollution commitments into concrete action, hosted at the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s since its inception in 2018.GPAP is an initiative founded by the UK Government Blue Planet Fund and Global Affairs Canada. It supports National Plastic Action Partnerships (NPAPs) in 25 countries as January 2025.By applying the Global Plastic Action Plan’s (GPAP) core principles, Nigeria NPAP seeks to shift efforts to address plastic pollution from fragmented strategies to integrated solutions that emphasize partnerships and collective action. These efforts will reduce plastic waste, protect ecosystems, preserve habitats, and safeguard livelihoods and public health.
The Communications and Engagement Specialist will undertake the development and implementation of a communications strategy for Nigeria NPAP while driving engagement within the country’s plastic ecosystem with a view catalyzing collective action against plastic waste.
Job Responsibilities
Support NPAP Manager and collaborates with GPAP Secretariat
Helps organize NPAP meetings, including preparing relevant materials, in consultation with GPAP and NPAP Secretariat
Engages with members, maintains and curates NPAP community member database and regularly communicates changes to NPAP Secretariat
Designs and implements NPAP communication strategy in alignment with GPAP Secretariat
Build and disseminate a country-specific communication strategy. This includes maintaining relevant social media channels and regular newsletters for the NPAP community, including managing and curating Toplink content.
Maintain updated key communication and marketing materials (e.g., NPAP brochure, factsheet and FAQs) needed for NPAP initiatives.
Updating central databases with NPAP Members’ information.
Maintain and update the NPAP database consisting of meeting minutes, presentation, reports, and other documents
Maintain proactive communications to NPAP Members through email, WhatsApp and other tools.
Coordinate closely with communications and public engagement counterparts at the GPAP and the World Economic Forum to highlight national updates to the global plastic action community.
Support NPAP Manager and Engagement Lead in preparing documents and reports, such as Task Force and Leadership Board meeting materials, including PowerPoint presentations and videos.
Supports the outreach and engagement of NPAP community members
Curation of national, regional and international events and opportunities (e.g., call for proposals job listing, etc) that would be relevant for the national plastic action community.
Liaise with NPAP Secretariat members to identify communication needs across various workstream, ensuring consistency of messaging and branding.
Development and maintenance of key communication materials such as talking points, PowerPoint presentations, flyers, briefs, social media posts, cards and videos to be readily shared.
Engage with NPAP partners and affiliate members to identify news-worthy stories to be shared across national and global platforms.
Draft reports, whitepapers, press releases, articles, and interview scripts / talking points etc for the NPAP Manager, Leadership Board members and GPAP Secretariat, as needed.
Support third-party consultants to conform deliverables to NPAP brand identity.
Curate the NPAP spaces on the GPAP Digital Collaboration Platform and coordinating the input of regional activities in the GPAP Annual Report.
Contribute to the design and execution of the proposed annual meeting of GPAP in collaboration with the GPAP Secretariat.
Qualifications/Job Requirements
Legally able to work in Nigeria
Minimum three-four years of experience developing and delivering communication content
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Communication, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Media, Journalism, or other related major
Demonstrated ability to work across the public, private and civil society sectors
Track-record developing communications campaigns in Nigeria and meaningfully engaging broad and diverse audiences on topics pertinent to national development
Strong organizational skills, ability to self-manage and multi-task across projects, prioritizing as necessary.
Advanced skills of Microsoft Office, Internet, virtual meeting tools, and graphic design/ video editing software.
Excellent story telling
Excellent oral, written, and visual communication skill
Excellent English both verbal and written
Fluency (written and spoken) in multiple local languages is a plus
Strong professional network in the host country within the sustainable development sector considered a competitive advantage.
