Job Title: Economist
Location: Lagos
Job Description
The Junior Economist will provide the Research team with analysis of economic data, foreign exchange data and data from the Nigerian, and other, fixed income markets. Working closely with the Chief Economist and the Head of Research, the Economist will source data from reliable sources, analyse them and present them clearly.
The Economist will be a self-starter and quick learner and will be expected to master the preparation of written and published reports within a year.
Key Stakeholders:
The Key Stakeholders are the Chief Economist, the Head of Research, the CEOs of Coronation Asset Management, Coronation Merchant Bank and Coronation Securities Limited. All the CEOs of other Coronation Group companies.
Role Responsibilities
Sourcing of data for research
The Economist will:
Obtain economic data from reliable sources such as: the websites of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS); the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); the World Bank (WB); the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and from other reliable sources;
Obtain market data from reliable sources such as: FMDQ; CBN, NGX Exchange; Bloomberg; the Debt Management Office (DMO) and from other reliable sources;
Monitor and provide updates to the Coronation Research team on major international economic releases (such as a new World Economic Outlook) in a timely manner.
Preparation of economic and financial data for research:
The Economist will:
Prepare economic data in a clear manner, using Excel and other applications;
Present this data to the Chief Economist and the Head of Research;
Present this data in a manner suitable for the regular publications of Coronation Research, such as its daily publications, the CFEX weekly, the Nigeria Weekly Update, etc.
Produce, present and publication, under the supervision of other members of the Coronation Research team, a Coronation Fixed Income Daily publication;
Present data for inclusion in the Research Morning Call;
Prepare and ensure the consistency and delivery of regular (eg daily) Coronation Research Products
Work consistently on the delivery of Coronation Research through its electronic distribution channels
Work on other projects at the direction of the Chief Economist and/or the Head of Research
Requirements
Technical Competencies
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from a leading Nigerian or other recognized university;
A CFA qualification, or partial qualification and/or a further degree in a relevant field would be an advantage
A minimum of 3 years experience working as an economist in a recognized institution or corporate in Nigeria. Experience working as an emerging market economist in an international investment house or bank, will also be considered;
Evidence of financial modeling ability in economics
Strong writing skills and ability to work to deadlines Behavioral Competencies
An enthusiasm for Economic and Financial Market Research, with deep curiosity about the drivers of economies and the drivers of financial markets
The willingness to learn and to engage in relevant training
Ambition to master and understand the economics of Nigeria and of other major countries
A desire to express oneself and communicate one’s ideas effectively
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
A self-starter who can organize their own time and schedules
