Job Title: Employment Counsel

Location: Nigeria

Position Description

• As Employment Counsel for the MEA region, you will serve as a key legal advisor, delivering strategic and practical guidance on a broad range of employment law matters.
• Your responsibilities will span both contentious and non-contentious issues, including but not limited to drafting employment policies documents and agreements, managing disputes and claims, advising on disciplinary actions and terminations, and leading settlement negotiations.
• In this role, you will work cross-functionally with HR teams, senior leadership, and external legal counsel to support business objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable labour laws.
• You will also provide legal insight on matters intersecting with employment law, such as corporate governance, commercial agreements, data privacy, and GDPR compliance.
• This position involves a significant focus on litigation and dispute resolution, requiring strong advocacy skills and a proactive approach to managing risk in a dynamic, international environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on employment-related matters across the MEA region.
• Reviewing, updating and/or drafting contracts of employment, employment related documentation.
• Supporting the Regional Employment Law Manager with drafting, advice, research and/or reviews of employment termination documents, processes and/or advices.
• Working with internal stakeholders and clients on employment law related matters.
• Reviewing, updating, and/or drafting policies for the workplace.
• Responding to legal information requests related to employment law in the region.
• Supporting with any administrative or process-driven tasks related to the employment law department.
• Keeping internal stakeholders apprised of developments in employment and employment related laws from time to time in the region.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel on cross-border employment matters.
• Contribute to internal training and knowledge sharing on employment law topics.

Minimum Requirements

• Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 3 years’ experience with a strong background in employment law.
• Familiarity with MEA labour laws and international HR practices preferred.
• Strong command of employment laws, regulations, and best practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communications.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Proven ability to manage complex matters in a fast-paced client facing, global environment.
• Proven experience in a client-facing role with a strong ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
