About the Position
The Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the protection of civilians caught in conflict. CIVIC works directly with governments, armed forces, and affected communities to develop and implement practical solutions that reduce civilian harm and strengthen accountability in conflict-affected areas.
Since its establishment in Nigeria in 2018, CIVIC has led programming focused on enhancing civil-military relations, promoting community-based protection mechanisms, and advocating for civilian harm mitigation in the northeast and other fragile regions.
Through direct engagement with military actors, security agencies, local authorities, and civilians, CIVIC Nigeria has contributed to policy shifts, capacity-building efforts, and the creation of inclusive dialogue platforms to bridge trust and improve protection outcomes.
CIVIC’s Nigeria program operates in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, with ongoing initiatives addressing civilian protection in asymmetric warfare, community protection committee (CPC) empowerment, and the use of technology and innovation, such as the TEELA, to monitor and respond to civilian harm.
CIVIC’s work is grounded in evidence-based advocacy, locally driven strategies, and a commitment to building durable systems of protection in conflict settings.
To ensure effective facilitation and meaningful engagement, CIVIC is seeking suitably qualified applicants for the position of Program Associate, Maiduguri-based based who will be part of the CIVIC Nigeria program team.
This is a contractual position, funded by FCDO until the end of March 2026, with a possibility of extension.
Job Description
Responsible for supporting the program team in coordinating the smooth implementation of programmatic activities across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.
Job Responsibilities
Supporting Program Implementation: Assist in the design, coordination, and delivery of CIVIC’s programs in conflict zones.
Monitoring and Reporting: Collaborate with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) officer to collect data, report on program activities, and provide real-time feedback on outcomes to ensure that goals are being met.
Community Liaison Support: Coordinate with Community Liaisons across the BAY states to ensure timely implementation of activities and adherence to reporting deadlines.
Local Stakeholder Engagement: Support the Community Engagement Manager in managing and engaging with local partners and government agencies to enhance program outcomes and ensure the protection of civilians.
Assessment Support: Assist the M&E team in administering surveys during research, impact assessments, or evaluations related to civilian protection, military engagement, and conflict analysis to support advocacy efforts.
Logistical Support: Collaborate with the operations team to ensure seamless planning and coordination of program activities, including organizing events, meetings, and other logistics for field operations.
Program Targets Tracking: Work with the MEL officers in ensuring project targets are being tracked and implemented as stipulated by the project documentation.
Scope of Work
The Associate will be responsible for:
Planning the implementation of program activities, including raising the request for the resources needed, drafting the ToR for the activity, and getting the necessary approvals from the Team Lead for the activity.
Responsible for communicating with the MEL officer on weekly achieved activities and target milestones achieved.
Providing observed meaningful feedback from the field activities to the Team Lead, and with recommendations, if any.
Support during program design processes in providing any contextual knowledge that will respond to civilian protection needs observed during daily activities.
Any other assigned programmatic support role.
Requirements
Skills and Experience:
Undergraduate Degree (B.Sc. or HND) in any Arts, Sciences, or Social Sciences subject
Minimum of 2 years relevant full-time work experience with an NGO
Demonstrated strong work ethic
Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail
Written and oral communication skills (English). Hausa and Kanuri strongly desired.
Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office
Proven people management skills
Ability to plan and prioritize workload
Able to work independently and show initiative
Ability to work in a multicultural environment and engage with people at all levels
