Position Overview
The Biomedical Engineering Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective functioning and maintenance of medical equipment and devices in NEST360 supported healthcare facilities.
This role involves assisting the BME manager to oversee the installation, calibration, repair, and maintenance of installed newborn equipment in supported facilities to enhance healthcare service delivery and patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Management:
Identify the biomedical equipment needs of healthcare facilities and develop support plans in collaboration with relevant stakeholders at the ministry and the health facilities
Assist the BME manager in the coordination of equipment installation, and commissioning of equipment, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and manufacturer specifications.
Conduct regular inspections and assessments of medical equipment to ensure proper functioning and adherence to safety standards.
Regular monitoring of equipment functionality and providing updates to the NEST team and the facility equipment technical team on ways to improve equipment use.
Maintenance and Repair:
Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for biomedical equipment to minimize downtime and prolong equipment lifespan.
Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, diagnose faults, and perform repairs or coordinate with external service providers for technical support.
Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance activities, including service history, repairs, and calibration data.
Training and Capacity Building:
Assist the BME manager to provide training and technical support to healthcare staff on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of biomedical equipment.
Conduct workshops or training sessions on equipment usage, safety protocols, and infection control practices to enhance staff competency and ensure proper utilization of equipment.
Quality Assurance:
Implement quality assurance protocols and standards for biomedical equipment management, including adherence to regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
Participate in quality audits and assessments to ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures related to equipment management.
Collaboration and Networking:
Liaise with equipment suppliers, manufacturers, and technical experts to stay updated on advancements in biomedical technology and best practices in equipment management.
Collaborate with healthcare facility staff, program managers, and other stakeholders to address equipment-related challenges and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related field
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in biomedical equipment management, preferably in a healthcare or NGO setting.
Proficiency in equipment installation, calibration, and maintenance techniques.
Strong technical skills in troubleshooting and repairing biomedical equipment.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality standards for biomedical equipment management.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and training facilitation skills.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Willingness to travel to healthcare facilities in remote or rural areas as needed.
