Malaria Consortium, established in 2003, is one of the world’s leading non-profit organisations specialising in the comprehensive prevention, control and treatment of malaria and other communicable diseases among vulnerable and under privileged populations. We increasingly find our work on malaria can be effectively integrated with other similar public health interventions for greater impact and therefore expanded our remit to include child health and neglected tropical disease interventions.
Malaria Consortium in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) is planning to implement a campaign to distribute insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Ondo State in August 2025. Malaria Consortium will also implement a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) research in relation to the campaign. Both the campaign and the M&E research are funded by Open Philanthropy based on GiveWell’s recommendation. The project will gather comprehensive data to assess the outcomes of the campaign in terms of ITN coverage, use rates and net durability, as well as to monitor relevant epidemiological indicator such as impact on malaria incidence rates reported from a sample of health facilities across the state.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Data Collector
Location: Ondo
Purpose of the assignment
The purpose of this terms of reference (TOR) is to engage research personnel that will carry out a baseline household survey before the campaign, an immediate survey after the net distribution, and a post-campaign evaluation survey across Ondo State.
Scope
The survey will be used to gather baseline and post-campaign data on coverage, ITN ownership and use rates and associated factors, physical conditions of the ITNs, malaria prevention in pregnancy, treatment seeking behaviour, and other relevant variables, and also validates the net campaign data during the immediate household survey by visiting households that were given nets.
Methods
During each of the three surveys, a sample of 832 households will be selected in 52 wards across the state. The 52 wards will be selected based on population proportional to size (PPS) sampling strategy.
Each team will cover a ward per day.
The survey includes household enumeration to sample randomly households in each ward (cluster), and administering interviews involving household heads (and in the case of baseline and post-campaign surveys, also women 15–49 years old), using mobile devices with the SurveyCTO software.
Specific Tasks
Field Data Collector:
Will be required to attend training prior to survey.
Enumerates households in each selected settlement in each ward.
Carries out data collection in sampled households, including obtaining written consents, administering interviews with heads of households and women 15–49 years old, collecting ITN physical integrity data by collecting data on each net owned by the household.
Takes good care of the mobile device issued for data collection, and ensures the device’s battery is kept charged.
Uploads the data to the server at the required frequency according relevant guidelines.
Ensures confidentiality of respondents’ personal data during and after interviews.
Reports to the team leader any issues and helps to solve problems.
Deliverables:
Complete data from 832 households in 52 wards collected and uploaded.
Process reports submitted by each team leader and coordinator.
Qualifications and Experience
Field Data Collectors:
Experience in conducting household surveys.
Experience in electronic data collection systems such as SurveyCTO or ODK.
Good knowledge of the English language.
Ability to give attention to detail.
Excellent proficiency in both the Yoruba and Ijaw languages.
